“They can’t hurt me. I’m not like the rest of you. There’s no one left I love.” – Johanna to Katniss

Johanna Mason Catching Fire Hunger Games

Johanna Mason is a previous victor from District 7, the Lumber District, who won her Hunger Games a “few years” prior to the 74th Hunger Games. In her interview and The Games themselves, Johanna pretended to be a terrified weakling so that the other tributes wouldn’t find her a threat. However, towards the end of The Games she unleashed her power, wielding axes with a “wicked ability to murder,” winning the title of Victor.

In Catching Fire, Johanna goes back into the arena with Katniss and Peeta as a tribute in the 75th Hunger Games, otherwise known as the Third Quarter Quell. The first time she meets the both of them, she strips down naked out of her tree costume from the Tribute Parade. Johanna is blunt and lacks any compassion towards anyone, especially Katniss. She does surprise Katniss however, by saving Beetee and Wiress in The Games so they could all form an alliance, and by reassuring her that the Gamemakers didn’t kill Prim. Only to call her “brainless” afterwords, a name she calls Katniss quite a bit. But she reassured her all the same.

“If they really killed her like this, they’d probably have an uprising on their hands! Don’t want that, do they?” She throws back her head and shouts, “Whole country in rebellion? Wouldn’t want anything like that!” – Johanna

Personality: Johanna is incredibly perceptive, sarcastic and brash. She speaks her mind, regardless of the consequences, or who she hurts. While Johanna has a very hard exterior, she definitely understands the greater good of the districts and would lay down her life for freedom. Before we meet her in ‘Catching Fire‘, it is inferred that Johanna was not always so cold. Before her first Hunger Games, Finnick alludes to her having people she loved in her life, whom Snow killed when she wouldn’t prostitute herself. The terror that The Capitol put her through definitely changed Johanna, as it did everyone. She is misunderstood because of her cold demeanor, but underneath she is still a good person, she just has very high walls keeping anyone from coming in to see that.

“Jealousy is certainly involved. I also think you’re a little hard to swallow. With your tacky romantic drama and your defender-of-the-helpless act. Only it isn’t an act, which makes you more unbearable. Please feel free to take this personally.” – Johanna to Katniss

Appearance: Judging from the tentative date of her first games, Johanna should be no older than 23-years-old. Johanna is described as an attractive young woman, having wide-set brown eyes and short brown spiky hair. In ‘Mockingjay‘, she returns from the Capitol with a shaved head after being tortured by them but eventually grows pieces of her hair back.

  1. Pierina says:

Naya Rivera should play it, she would be PERFECT for it and she is amazing and so talented, she deserves it, she would make the movie more great :)

    • Kiwi says:

I totally agree! I love her and she’s my favorite character from Glee! She would definitely fit that B*tchy, bad ass kind of girl.. :D

  2. Camilla Belle, and her tomboy voice. When she turns it on.

  3. Rorymellark says:

    Naya Rivera, hands down.

  4. i suggest eliza dushku,,she’s perfect for district 7 lumber,,,,as i saw her movie “wrong turn”,,,strong personality,,boyish,,

  5. Christy says:

Linna Carter embodies Johanna in mind, body, and spirit. She’s a strong woman, strong warrior, and wickedly good at showing you a glimpse of vulnerability just at the right moment. I would LOVE to see this fresh face playing one of the freshest heroines around. LINNA CARTER gets my vote.

  6. Rachel says:

    Rooney Mara definitely…….. definitely

  7. Lauren says:

I can definately see Mila Kunis playing this role. She usually plays the characters with the sassy attitudes in movies. I can see her carrying an axe and kicking butt!!!! I dont know why people are suggesting others like Kristen Bell….. You have to choose the person with the most experiance with this kind of character. MILA KUNIS ALL THE WAY!!!!

  8. mab says:

Jessica Biel for me in first place, then, Rooney Mara and Mila Kunis.

  9. Radar says:

Naya Rivera definitely should be on the spot. She will be a very good Johanna Mason. =D

  10. haley says:

I WANT AND NEED HER TO PLAY THIS ROLE!!! SHE IS THE PERFECT ROLE!!! I WILL BE PISSED IF SHE DOES NOT PLAY THIS ROLE!!! I mean stars shouldn’t play her role, people already imagine then as something else. Let non stars have a chance at stardom.

  11. Hayleey says:

I think Eliza Dushku should play Johanna, because she is slightly older and has that independent, witty look about her. Johanna is portrayed as strong and abrasive, and i don’t think I can get Naya’s Glee image out of my head- fun, bubbly and needy. She is also to young to play the told of a 25-30 year old woman.

  12. Lilly Jordans says:

I think an unknown should play her. Just found this wicked awesome Johanna Mason audition tape over on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5PfsIkqRcQ&context=C42b1503ADvjVQa1PpcFNJc-01ctLY3tj7RAtgA0FkmCECyq2s2eE=

  13. Grace says:

Alexa vega or Mila kunez would be a good Johanna mason I really like those two actresses they have the spunk and attitude to be her

  14. angie says:

    Kristen Bell!

  15. Grace says:

That’s why Mila kumiss needs to play Johanna because they need someone less known than Kristen bell she’s not righ for the part

  16. Grace says:

That’s why Mila kumiss needs to play Johanna because they need someone less known than Kristen bell she’s not righ for the part

  17. Phoeniix says:

Hi , um , i’m phoeniix & i’m gping to be 16 in December . I never really took acting lessons but I have acrting in school a few times . We all don’t know this , but we ALL act in everyday life . We just don’t notice . I , would LOVE to try out for the Johanna Mason part . I use to have short spimy hair in middle school , so I think i’d be okay with being her & it would mean alot to me if I actually got the part .

  18. Jen says:

Summer Glau-look her up on YouTube-Her role as River Tam in Serenity sounds like Johanna would have in her games-meek looking with a “wicked ability to murder.”

  19. Youtube search: Nathalie Paulding as Johanna Mason. I was in Bully and replaced Natalie Portman as Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank on Broadway. Top agent, Adam Schweitzer of ICM, in regards to casting The Hunger Games, said: “studios are willing to take chances on completely unknown actors in many of these roles because the title of the film is the box office draw, not a famous A-list name celebrity.”

  20. Nith Dapifer says:

Anyone else thinks that she is lesbian?

    • Grace says:

Dude stop being a turd you need to stop saying mean stuff to people we are just freaking Posting who we think shoul d be finnick

  21. Carmen says:

EMMA CHARLOTTE DUERRE WATSON!!! No one could ever do a better job!

  22. Caroline says:

There is only one answer: NAYA RIVERA!!!

  23. Steven815 says:

    Yvonne Strahovski Or Kristen Bell

  24. V says:

Y is it a pic fro, buffy the vampire slayer comic books?

  25. Kota K says:

    DEFINITELY: Linna Carter

  26. treenz says:

@ Nith Dapifer: Yes. I always read Johanna as a dyke. Not because strong women must be lesbians, but because she seemed to have a comradely way with the male charatcers and was mostly uninterested in them. (also, her flashing Katniss in the elevator? Totally a come-on!) And she just has this hard-to-define dykey quality about her, yanno?

Anyway: I pictured Johanna as Hollie from The Descent. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell, but they are WAY too girly to play this spiky-haired axe-wielder!

  27. may says:

    Katie McGrath should play Johanna.

  28. Whitney says:

I don’t think Jena Malone is a bad choice to play Johanna, but I feel like they just cut her hair short. For some reason I always pictured Johanna with short hair and really tom-boyish.

  29. Based on the look and attitude of Johanna Mason, Alannah Raitt is your girl. She is from Washington State (District 7), knows how to use an ax, has short spiky brown hair, wide set brown eyes and walks/talks the way I imagined Johanna would.

She is deeply dedicated to the role and project, just to get a chance to be recognized would be a blessing for all of her hard work.

Linked is her Tumblr and I will also link her Facebook page.
    Thanks for the continued support!

    :)

  30. Shelby says:

I pictured Mila Kunis while i was reading the book

  31. I like the color blu :) says:

I really liked Linna Carter’s acting in that video attached to this :)

And I’m not sure why, but Johanna Mason is a character that I really have a lot of respect for… She just seems so… So loving, yet she has no love to give to anyone, so she masks it with sarcasm and anger.

  32. kaleb says:

i think that if u take mily cyrus and she had her hair cut. she would be a good johana. she is in that age range. isnt she?
