Catching Fire Character Profile: Mags
“Well, I can’t leave Mags behind” says Finnick. “She’s one of the few people who actually likes me.”
Mags is a previous victor of a very early Hunger Games, somewhere within the first two decades after the Reapings started in Panem. In fact, at the time of the Third Quarter Quell she is in her 80′s which would make her around five-years-old during the Inaugural Hunger Games, and the only character we are introduced to who would have been alive to see the start of it all.
Mags comes from District 4, whose main industry is Fishing. It follows then that her main talents are tying knots and making fishhooks. After winning her first Hunger Games, she was a mentor to tributes from District 4, including Finnick Odair and Annie Cresta.
“She gives me a toothless smile and an unintelligible comment I think might be praise. Suddenly I remember how she volunteered to replace the young, hysterical woman in her district… And I decide I want her on my team.”
In the 75th Hunger Games, otherwise known as the Third Quarter Quell, Mags becomes the female tribute from District 4 after volunteering to take the place of Annie Cresta. Katniss is quickly drawn to Mags in training, not only because of her skill with fishhooks, but that she volunteered to save Annie as well. This makes Mags one of the only tributes Katniss wants to align with. During the Quell, Mags does indeed team up with Katniss, along with Peeta and Finnick. And Mags turns out to be a valuable ally, being the first to discover how to find water and save it by weaving air tight baskets.
Personality and Appearance: Mags is an elderly woman in her 80′s, and is described as slight and weak. She is said to babble most every time she talks, and is therefore hard to understand. However Mags is friendly with a “toothless smile“, and is incredibly clever with tying knots, fashioning fishhooks and survival skills, which she’d happily teach anyone who asks. She’s also a selfless woman, willing to give up her life for the greater good.

BETTY WHITE ALL THE WAY FOR MAGS!:)
Betty White!
I think that everyone is just saying Betty White because everyone loves her because she is hilarious. But I don’t think she is RIGHT for being Mags.
I think Betty White is great, but I think Mags should be a more old-ladyish lady. Betty White, at age 90, is like a perfect pic of elderlyness, but Mags should be someon more small and bony.
Cloris Leachman!
Betty White would upstage Katniss and Peeta in every scene she’s in. She’d be great to watch, but a distraction from the action. I vote for Linda Hunt.
Louise Fletcher, who is a complete trip… she’s currently in Shameless on Showtime. Way back, she was Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. She can pull off – this very very tough broad, energetic old lady, who WILL kick your ass. But only if she has to…
Mags has to be a great character actress, and be all – warm and caring, loving even – and also – believable as someone who would do everything it took to win, to mentor for so long – 60 years! – and to sacrifice herself in the end.
I think there’s a real sense of the absurd underneath – she’s just making fishhooks, but she’s doing a whole lot more. She has to be – old lady, but not old.
Betty White should be Mags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really don’t think betty white should play mags AT ALL!!!!!!!!!
