Catching Fire Character Profile: Plutarch Heavensbee
“It begins at midnight.” – Plutarch Heavensbee
Plutarch Heavensbee is the Head Gamemaker of the 75th Annual Hunger Games in ‘Catching Fire‘, being that Seneca Crane was “let go” from the 74th Hunger Games.
While Katniss didn’t realize it was him at the time, she first encounters Plutarch as she shot an arrow through the pigs mouth during her training in ‘The Hunger Games‘. Out of surprise, Plutarch is thrown off balance and falls into a punch bowl. The two joke about this during their first formal meeting, while on the Victory Tour for the 74th Hunger Games.
“Plutarch has run his thumb across the crystal face of the watch and for just a moment an image appears, glowing as if lit by candlelight. It’s another mockingjay. Exactly like the pin on my dress.” – Plutarch, ‘Catching Fire’
At the final banquet for the Victory Tour, Plutarch asks Katniss to dance. In an attempt to earn her trust, he shows her his elaborate watch which flashes with a Gold Mockingjay. The Mockingjay had come to represent both Katniss and the Rebellion, but these are things she does not yet realize. Plutarch was actually intending on giving Katniss a hint about the Arena.
“We’re fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction.” – Plutarch, ‘Mockingjay’
When both Peeta and Katniss are reaped again for the Third Quarter Quell, Plutarch is shocked. But for the remainder of ‘Catching Fire‘ he lies low, treating them like any other tribute, and acting as shocked as the rest of the Gamemakers when they show signs of rebellion in their training. It isn’t until she’s rescued from the arena that Katniss realizes Plutarch was a main force behind the rebellion, in fact the Commander of the Rebel Forces.
“We had to save you because you’re the mockingjay, Katniss. While you live, the revolution lives.” – Plutarch, ‘Catching Fire’
Personality: Plutarch wants the rebellion to succeed, as well as good things for Katniss and all of the past victors. However, those things are mainly for his own gain. His upbringing in the Capitol and experience as a Gamemaker have put his main focus on producing a great show. He organizes the rebels’ image and is constantly pushing to make rebel propos, striving to make every thing the rebellion is doing look appealing – thereby making himself look good.
“Don’t get blown up. I’ve got enough on my plate without having to replace you.” – Plutarch, ‘Mockingjay’
Appearance: The only description of Plutarch’s appearance is that he is a “large man“, leaving casting decisions wide open.

Why is Katniss’ hand on his pants?!?
Same thing I was thinking.
her hand is not on his pants, her hand is in the air! it just looks like her hand is on his pants. blame it on the artist( ha ha).
Yes, it is sooo awkward! So awkward!
I imagined him looking like Paul Giamatti, but he’s not very “big” as in tall, so maybe someone like Robert Downey Jr. (you probably dissagree) And (off topic) i want Dwayne Johnston to play boggs
I want Robert!!!
I always imagined Oliver Platt in the role!
ok??? sorry i was wondering what the heck is katniss doing
sorry, i didt mean for it to look like i was angry or yelling
I don’t know the guys name but I always pictured Kingsley Shacklebolt from Harry Potter as Plutarch. I can’t be the only one, right?
That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking!!
i think johnny dept should play him!!!!
yeah! use Johny Dept!!!!
no way hes not old looking enough
and hes not fat enough i picture the guy being more stout
Johnny Depp, and no I don’t think I would be able to watch Catching Fire and not see Jack Sparrow in Plutarch Heavensbee. It’d be too weird.
the actor playing peeta should play gale and vise-versa. right?
I think Chord Overstreet should play Finnick!
I heard that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been added to the cast. If so I don’t think they have said what role he is to play I would have thought it may be Plutarch.
More information on Philip Seymour Hoffman taking on Plutarch role here: http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/philip-seymour-hoffman-cast-in-hunger-games-sequel-catching-fire
GREAT casting
Phillip Seymour Hoffman is an excellent choice for Plutarch. I can see the pompous, self serving air now… He will be brillant if he accepts. The caliber of actors they are looking at (PSH, Cecily Tyson, etc.) is wonderful!
Not sure why, I always heard Andre Braugher’s voice when Plutarch spoke.
I think that Jim Broadbent would be good for the role of Plutarch. This is a tiny bit off subject, but Woody Harrelson is PERFECT for Haymitch.
I as actually picturing someone a bit like him.. I was picturing someone like Nick Frost, who was bald and of course older.
I don’t get how people can say Johnny Depp would be perfect, the role isn’t suited to him AT ALL. Ever notices how all of his roles have some quirky trait about them? Plutarch is as normal as normal can be in that time period.
Johnny Depp for sure!
I actually think Phillip Hoffman if an amazing choice for Plutarch. He has variable skills to play the part right and I think talent is very important to be Plutarch, due to the insensibility of his statements sometimes, which seem to only bother everyone but him. I guess Plutarch is one of the most difficult characters, even though Finnick is more emotional and all.
Just hope they choose the right cast, although even if they don’t, I still love THG, ALWAYS <'3
CHANNING TATUM!!!!
For some reason, I definitely thought of Ciaran Hinds for Plutarch, even now knowing that it will be played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who, I’d argue, wouldn’t have gotten far in the District 1 without being a bit more handsome and stately (like Hinds). For reference, Ciaran Hinds looks a bit in the face like Alan Rickman, maybe more classically handsome.
