The L.A Times has posted an article, from a source unable to speak on record, about who Lionsgate has in mind for a director. According to the source the master list is about seven to eight directors long.

The master list is seven or eight names long, all men, and all have some significant credits to their name. Lionsgate is basically hoping to re-create the “Harry Potter” moment when Warner Bros. brought Alfonso Cuaron to direct the third film in the series. (Chris Columbus left after helming the first two.) Cuaron was a creative choice who excited critics, journalists and author J.K. Rowling, who all were interested in what the director of “Y Tu Mama Tambien” would do with the series.

In fact, Cuaron is in the mix for “Catching Fire,” along with David Cronenberg and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, among others. All have been working in the industry for decades and trend more toward darker, indie fare than commercial hits.

Any of the three men would be a reassuring choice for fans and Collins. And all three auteurs could have compelling takes on the material. Other names are sure to rise to the surface, but Cronenberg, Inarritu and Cuaron should give fans some reassurance that Lionsgate is doing its best to try to preserve their beloved franchise.

****Remember this is NOT AN OFFICIAL release, it’s only rumors at this point, and until we hear the Official word from Lionsgate this will be treated as a only a rumor****

So what does everyone think about the list so far? Are you happy with the choices Lionsgate may be making on a director? Let us know in the comments below!

Of the three I’d have to go with Alfonso Cuaron. although I do hope they make a longer list

  2. Alyssa says:

I always thought the third movie was the worse. Wonderful. Now they want to ruin the Hunger Games. Well, at least the first movie was amazing…

  3. Carissa says:

Is there going to be another book series?? Because in MockingJay at the end of the book it seems like Suzanne Collins gives a hint and it says something like but “there are worst games to play…”

  4. TaySwiftRocksMySox says:

By “worse games to play,” she was referring to the actual Hunger Games.

  5. Kelly says:

Ugh, I actually don’t like Alfonso Cuaron. I have to admit that I’ve never gotten why people seem to be so enamoured of him. To me it seems like he makes the same movie over and over again.
I have to say that I have had the feeling that given the time crunch and the issue that the studio had with Ross regarding it I am expecting the director to be someone who is relatively unknown.

  6. Elle says:

I like this list! Seems like they are in the right direction. A darker, edgier take for Catching Fire is going to definitely improve things.

  7. JoeC says:

Cuaron would be an excellent choice, but is anyone else thinking of what amazing sh!t Cronenberg could come up with for catching fire?! That would be interesting…

Hopfully Lionsgate finds a director with a distinct visual style that differs from Ross’ handheld, gritty style (not that there was anything wrong with it), something like what happened with the ‘Alien’ series with Scott, Cameron and Fincher.

Also, let this be my formal proposal to Lionsgate to put my name on that directors list :P

  8. claude says:

not innaritu. he’s not very creative when it comes to story telling and creating something extraordinaire for catching fire material.

  9. Angelina says:

At least there might not be the shaky camera. That what I didnt like at all :P made me sick…

  10. Kevin says:

Please do not pick Cuaron. I hated what he did with the third Harry Potter. HG was so good and true to the book. Cuaron ruined HP and I don’t want him to do the same with Catching Fire.
