Our Fan Question of the Week comes from….Hannah
SPOILER ALERT – this question is all about the ending of the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay. If you haven’t finished reading all three books, the perhaps you might want to come back later.
If you could change the ending of Mockingjay, what would you have happen differently? What would be the cause and effect of your decisions?
***Summer***- I would personally change how quickly the book ended. I don’t like how katniss’ mom just left. She said she couldn’t return but as a mother of 2 I would never leave one child alone if something happened to the other. Not until I thought she could deal with it. And that she wanted to live her own life. Also I wouldnt think Gale would just leave Katniss either. Nothing ever became of him. These are some of the things I would change. I hope you enjoyed my answer!
***Jacqui*** I summed up what I felt about the ending of Mockingjay in this review I wrote back at the time of its release, so let me share that again as it still holds today. I would have liked to have seen Katniss own her place as the Mockingjay. I had expected her character to be more developed in the final book. I thought her internal struggle would be reflected in what was happening in Panem – that as the districts took back their power, so too would Katniss emerge as the master of her own destiny. Unfortunately it never really happens. It felt, to me, that her inner journey was never fully resolved. The ending was a little unsettling, which is definitely part of its strength and its beauty, but a part of me was left wishing for a just a little bit more.
***Hamilton*** I feel that the ending could have used more closure as well. Not only internally like Jacqui mentions, but with what was going on in the rest of Panem outside of the rebuilt District 12. We get very little in the way of glimpses into how the structure of the country had changed – hopefully for the better, but even for worse if that was the case. I would have liked to see more how the districts had come together and become a new nation of Panem. Do they still think of themselves as separate districts? Has it been harder for some to accept that the old power is gone? What kind of power do those in the Capitol have now? Those are all questions I would have liked to have seen explored a bit more. I don’t think I would have changed any plot elements, such as having certain characters not die. It was all rather hard to deal with, but ultimately the ending needed to be hard to deal with to get the point across.
***Audrey*** I feel like the ending was too rushed. There were many things that I wanted explained. I think I would have liked to see Katniss’ trial – and had that explained. The consequences and aftermath of the revolution and how daily life had changed. SOMETHING needed to happen with Gale. Personally, I’d rather have had him killed off than never heard from again. I just didn’t feel like enough things were resolved, but maybe that was the idea.
So there you have it..the opinions of the staff here at My Hunger Games..now it’s your turn…

You are surrounded in darkness for about 15 seconds. Then you can feel the metal plate pushing you out of the cylinder, into the open air. For a moment, your eyes are dazzled by the bright sunlight and you are concious only of a strong wind and with the hopeful smell of pine trees. “Ladies and Gentleman, Let the 74th Annual Hunger Games Begin.”
You know have 60 seconds in your mind you are running through the options….5…4…3…2…1 and a cannon shot..What is your strategy? Do run or fight? Also tell us what your strategy for the whole games? Tell us what happens from the sound of that cannon.
This fan question is just like the last one..Get Creative! Explore your options and search your mind for the answers. This may be a Hunger Games question but you don’t always have to take Katniss’s/Peeta’s perspective. If you would like to use their’s its fine but we would also love to hear your original ideas.
As always I will choose a few answers for the main page so make them good
I can’t wait to hear your respones!

Before reading your question of the week read the first paragraph and then follow the instructions…..
Close your eyes…You made it back to your District from winning The Hunger Games…Your sitting in your house in Victors Village with your family watching the announcement of the Quarter Quell..You see the president draw an envelope from the box..in it reads ” On the seventy-fifth anniversary as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors.” You pause for a moment and then it hits you. You are going back into the arena…. Here is your fan question of the week…
If you were called upon to return to the Quarter Quell as a tribute, What would be going through your mind? What emotions do you feel? What would be your strategy?
Remember you don’t have to write it from Katniss’ view. You are allowed to be your own character in this. If you want to be Katniss then write like you are her. If not write as someone else..have fun with it

We posted a our weekly fan question to you last week:
“You’re not afraid of fire, are you, Katniss?” he sees my expression and grins. With that said here is your fan question of the week.
“Why do you think that fire is an appropriate symbol for Katniss in The Hunger Games Trilogy?”
Here are some of the top answers:
Wendy- Besides the obvious fact, that it represents Katniss’s strength and determination, it also reflects how she feels about being destructive. Fire is dangerous, and she realizes that her drive leaves a wake of death in her footsteps. Also, it’s unpredictable like her actions at the end of Mockingjay, at the execution (I won’t say more in case someone is reading this that hasn’t finished the series). Finally, it’s easily spread. It moves and consumes, like her rebellion against the capitol moved and consumed the citizens of Panem for justice. Maybe as a side note, fire is enthralling. Many people like watching fire burn. Peeta often says she doesn’t understand the effect she has on people, and though the reader cannot understand fully because we see everything from her eyes, she obviously has some innate ability to capture and hold someone’s attention in a unique way. Though, maybe I am stretching it with that last point.
Shh It’s a Secret- I like to believe this: Katniss is not the fire, the fire is Katniss.I know. Talk about contradictory. But I like to think of it this way, it represents all she is, and doesn’t want to be. Katniss Everdeen started out normal, well, as normal as you can get in The Hunger Games, but when her father died, she changed, became harder, colder, more prone to grudges, though she was still herself, and that’s what set the stage for the spark. The spark itself was when the Avox girl and her companion were taken away. It’s a much understated theme in the book, though I believe it to be true. However, the spark began to spread years later. When Prim was reaped? A little piece caught on fire. As they trained? It began to catch, albeit very, very slowly. Then the Games began, Katniss witnessed murder, death, she lost Rue, and the flames began to warm. By the end of the Quarter Quell and the beginning of the rebellion, the fire had caught completely, and suddenly, from the outside, she was no longer known as Katniss Everdeen, the people she loved could not tell the difference between her and the act she put on for the audience. To them, she was no longer the Girl from the Seam. She was the Girl on Fire, the Mockingjay, and the leader of a rebellion. Inside, however, she is still herself. For a while. Then as they begin to win, the fire, which burned like an inferno outside, began to move inwards, and by the time the rebellion was done and over with, even she could not remember who Katniss Everdeen was, could not remember a time when she was not a murderer, the figurehead of District Thirteen. She had been consumed. Katniss is not, in any way, fire. She is the wood, the kindle, the stage, the figurehead, whatever you wish to call her, and it was chance, or destiny, depending, that caused the spark. The fire is the all-consuming beast, threatening to destroy some, and save others. Unpredictable. Untrustable. Like the Games. Like Katniss Everdeen.
Sarah-There are so many reasons why I believe Katniss Everdeen embodies fire perfectly. Here are a four.
1) Fire is what warms you from the cold. You see this type of fire in Katniss when she cares for her sister Prim, her brief friendship with Rue, and with Peeta when he needs it in the arena. She protects those she loves from the harsh cold circumstances around them with her warmth.
2) If you mess with fire, you get burned. Katniss is a strong young woman who is prepared to do what it takes to survive and protect the ones she loves. Not to mention a woman with mad archery skills. Just ask the tribute who takes the life of Rue. You don’t want to mess with Katniss. Because like fire, you will get burned.
3) Fire is mesmerizing. Katniss is the tribute that gets everyone’s attention, and it’s not just fiery clothes that Cinna designs. It is her beauty, skill, and fiery determination that mesmerize the districts.
4) Last but not least, Fire spreads and consumes. Katniss is the spark that spreads the fire of revolt throughout the districts. Her fire continues and intensifies as the Mockingjay until the capitol is consumed. Ultimately, Katniss represents the fire of Change for Panem. And after the fire comes the rain. The rain of hope that only Katniss’ fire could bring.
Kelci Brook- To see a fire in a dream, suggests that it is time to express yourself more freely and let go of the old outdated ways of thinking. Katniss goes all out with her thinking. To see something burning in your dreams indicates that you are experiencing some intense emotions. Her father died in a mine accident, she got put in The Hunger Games, and again in the Quarter Quell…she has a lot of intense emotions. There is some situation or issue that you can no longer avoid and ignore. She cannot ignore the things the capitol does, if it was not obvious. Therefore, fire best fits Katniss’ symbol. Fire could haunt people in their dreams, and so could she. Fire symbolizes rage. She has rage for the capitol and shows it. I couldn’t say she isn’t afraid to show her rage for the capitol, because, well, she is. She is just afraid of what they would do to her family. If there ever was a dichotomous element it would be Fire. Fire, the bringer of destruction, the symbolism of chaos and war. Fire burns everything, bringing nothing but ruin. Fire banishes the darkness. Fire cleanses and purifies. And sometimes, Love is spoken of as an eternal flame.
Thank you EVERYONE who contributed their answers! They were all brilliant. Stay tuned for a new fan question coming soon!

WINNER!!
Danielle
Danielle won the fan question contest “Lights, Camera, ACTION!!! With this response:
I think in some ways, it affects all the tributes quite deeply and harshly. With there being cameras everywhere, they are forced to play this game the Capitol has created, and to think in manner that is strictly strategic, just like if they were robots designed for conquest. They don’t want the Capitol to see the true affect these games have on them, but at the same time, they fear for their lives. And because most of them don’t want to appear weak on camera, their emotions build up inside them, causing many of the tributes to break down in the arena. They know their families are watching, and they understand that if they want to survive, they have to fight for it. And because of this, every single one of them become different people in that arena. And even afterwards, The Hunger Games don’t end, the cameras continue to roll, and the past characteristics of the surviving tributes (in all of The Hunger Games) are long gone. So in conclusion, the cameras force the tributes into becoming completely different people compared to who they were before, and never allows them a single moment to ever truly consider their fate.
