Chapter six: Hidden truth
“Why did you do so?” I scream and push Charlie in to the wall. “Isn’t it enough with my district blowing up one time?”
Charlie just smiles at me and it makes me even angrier, I thought she was nice. God I can’t judge the dog after it’s hair. I’m about to jump at her again but when she wraps her hand around my arm and forces me to back in to a wall. For being a Capitol citizen she’s really strong.
“Listen closely, if you haven’t noticed yet; the audience loved you. And there is actually a thought behind the costume which you won’t be able to see. And I can’t explain, I’m telling you too much already. I don’t care about how you interpret it, you are going to do your best to get sponsors. Okey?”
She lets go of my arm and I quickly pull it back to me, her nails hade been pushed in to my skin and it hurts badly. But I’m not going to let her think I’m weak. And what does she mean by saying she can’t explain, what is it really that is need to be explained? I know what happened, I don’t need any explanation. She has made it very clear to me that she hates me, she hates me as much as President Snow probably hates my dad. Wilja takes my hand and nod at Charlie, what now? Are they on the same side? Am I surrounded by peoples who wants to see me die?
“Come now.” Wilja says.
We travel by car back to the high building, finally in my rum I rip of my dress and take on a white shirt and a pair of blue jeans. Then I wash my face so all make-up disappears. When I’m finished I don’t really know what I’m suppose to do. What will happen now? Will they throw us into the arena as fast as possible? All the questions but not a single answer. Someone knock at my door, it Wilja, she tells me she’s here to get me down to dinner. First now I realize how hungry I am, and even thought I hate Wilja right now a follow her to our own dinning room. I lick myself around my lip, the table is set with so much food. Pasta, rice, different types of sauces, chicken, large slices of meat, water, milk, wine and other drinks I don’t know the name of. Boiled potato, soup, bread, some sort of stew… I sit down at a chair then I pour soup into a bowl. I dip a bit of bread in it. It tastes good.
“Ok, I understand you’re not content with what happened.”
I shock my head, no I’m not quite happy with being blown up.
“You’re going have to put it aside, Charlie actually did you a favor. You stole the show, if you didn’t noticed.”
“She made it look like I blew up!” I snap.
Almost unnoticeable she tilts her head in a direction, it move slowly back and forth, from one point to another. Then I see, she’s pointing at a camera. We’re being watched, the Capitol are regarding every move we make. And they hear everything we say. That’s why no one can explain what really happened at the tribute parade. But again, do I really need an explanation?
“I understand that you’re angry.” She says, “But you are going have to let that go. Right now we have other things to focus on.
“What?” I ask.
I’m still suspicious with the parade, but I’m not the person who let’s my anger get in between the business.
“Oh dear, did you even listen when President Snow held his speech?”
I shake my head, no why should I care about what my enemy has to say?
“OK, I’ll explain then. But you better listen this time. You will spend three days in a trainging center, starting tomorrow. There you will practice surviving skills. I actually don’t know much more about it, but I think you will be informed tomorrow. We’re going to be down at nine. The third day you will be able to show the game makers your best skill, or if I were you I would show them my best skill… Or well, not
mine, that’s painting nails. But yours… Anyway. They will give you a score between 0 and 12. The higher score the more sponsors. Then you will be interviewed by Caesar Flickerman. Live, and there’s going to be a big audience. Make the audience like you, and you’ll get sponsors. And.. And then…”
“The arena…” I finish her.
I quickly eat up without saying anything and then I leave the table. Tomorrow’s the training center, I’ll better get some sleep.
*
I hear the blast before I’m hurled through the air. It throws be more than 16 feet forward and I hit the ground very hard. I don’t hear anything. Why don’t I hear anything? People are running around me, screaming things to my face. But I don’t understand. I look around and now I see him, my father slowly getting up.
“Father!” I scream.
I can’t hear my own voice, at least not clear.
“Hello there…”
BANG!
The blood falls down his forhead.
“No! Don’t leave me!” I scream and run towards him.
He falls down to the ground and then he sinks through it and vanishes.
“FATHER!” I scream until my voice is gone.I open my eyes, sweat is running down my whole body and I breath fast and straggly.
"It was just a dream." I tell myself.
But once it was reallity...I get up and take a quick shower. Then I put on some clothes someone has put out for me. Black tight pants and a black tight t-shirt. The breakfast is far from disappointing, I eat one bread with melt butter on it and two boiled eggs. When I’m finished, Wilja comes to get me.
“Time to go! It’s almost nine o’clock.”
I’m not nervous, the only thing I’m nervous about is to come in contact with someone. I would like to skip that of all things. The elevator is incredible fast and it tickles in my stomach.
“Well, we’re here!” Wilja says.
The doors open.
