Chapter 19

Sleep didn't come easy that night. I laid in bed, looking up at the ceiling of my room. I don't remember when, or why, but at some point in the night I got really bored. Who could I have talked to? The person I really wanted to talk to was Colton, but he was probably sleeping already. The games were tommorow, tommorow I might die. They're letting me take Rose's necklace into the arena, Lucy pulled some strings for me when she was still alive.
I got up from my bed, not even bothering to put on sandals. I walked on my tiptoes to the elevator, careful not to wake anyone. I wanted to go to the roof.
I clicked floor 12, I would take the stairs from there. The elevator door opened and I snuck my way to the back of the floor where the stairs were. I climed the metal stairs quitly, there must have only been 25 stairs before I got to the top. That was when I heard them, Sophie and Nick.
Their voice were barely audible, but as I got close to the half open door, I could make out their words. Through the crack of the door I could see Sophie was sitting, leaning on her hand closest to Nick, Nick's giant hand was placed on hers.
"Listen, Sophie, I won't let you die" Nick said softly.
"But Nick-" Sophie started to protest, but Nick cut her off with a long, passionate kiss. This seemed to startle Sophie.
The kiss startled me even more.
Sophie and Nick kissed, and I felt weird watching, but it would have been even worse if I interuppted. They seemed to fi', so perfectly together, and for a second I wondered what would happen if me and Colton kissed? Nothing good, that's all I knew, it's never good to make emotional ties like that in the Hunger Games.
Finnally they stopped their kissing.
"I won't let you die" Nick said firmly, and Sophie just nodded. I guessed they were friends, maybe even lovers before the games, because Sophie and Nick started to talk about their childhood. Something about them letting a rat loose in a classroom when they were in 5th grade.
"And then like 10 peacekeepers came and all shoot at it!" Sophie said laughing.
"And they missed it everytime!" Nick said, throwing his head up laughing at their childhood memories.
"Ya, and they were questioning everyone but us!" Sophie laughed.
So they were friends before, maybe even best friends. I started to think that was good for them, but then I remembered Nick's promise to the capitol, and I knew he was going to keep it, even if Sophie didn't want him to.
He was going to save Sophie at all costs.
