chapter 25:


Alicia lets out a cruel laugh, and I hear a scream. Probably from John, but I can't see him threw the tree Alicia threw me behind. Alicia takes out a knife from her small backpack and aims it at John. I freeze with fear, just like the time Lucy fought with John. I'm a chicken. No, that's an insult to chickens, I'm a whole other kind of whimp. She's about to throw it, she won't miss, she never does. I watched her for a bit in the training center, she hit the heart of the dummt almost every time. One time she hit the stomach, but that was the furthest she has gotten away from an insta kill.
I get ready to hear the cannon, signalling the death of my ally. It would be all my fault, I was the one screaming in the woods like an idiot. I'm sure that everyone is making fun of me in the capitol, waiting for Alicia to finish John and me off. I hear a cannon, and a whimper escapes my lips. He was such an innocent little boy, and it was my fault he is dead. It's my fault Alicia gets the joy of killing him. It's my fault he-
"Colton!" I can hear my presumably dead ally shout.
I peek out from behind a tree, and see Alicia's limp body laying on the cool ground of the arena, a knife halfway in the back of her head. A pool of blood forms around her head. My allie from district four stands above his district allie, an ugly scowl on his face. Two other people are behind him, a boy and a girl. The girl is cowering behind the boy, who is much bigger than her. It looks like Colton found our two missing allies.
"Daisy! John!" Colton says, the scowl is replaced by a smile of relief, until he looks to the ground and sees the dead girl from 12.
"Mia" I think I can hear someone whisper, so softly it could even have been said by the rustling of the leaves. I feel a pit in my stomach, it's my fault.
"Let's go, the rest of the careers won't be to far behind" Colton sighs, trying to keep a straight face. He was right, Tom would be sprinting threw the woods to find us. He probably thinks I'm dead already.
It feels weird leaving Mia's body, bloody and dirty on the ground, though Sophie did take off her necklace, saying that if one of us wins, we can give her family a token to remember her by.
As we walk threw the woods, I sprint to catch up with Colton, praying that the cameras would be on us.
I make my voice quiet, so quiet, I don't even know if he can hear. "You know Zach wants to take down Snow. Not like he can, Snow is to smart to get overthrown" I quickly add "I overheard him talking about it right before I went into the arena, there was no time to tell anyone else"
"You say something?" Colton says, looking at me questioningly for a moment before he focuses straight ahead.
"No, it must have been the leaves" I lie and slow my pace so I'm walking next to Sophie. Nick is carrying a crying John threw the woods.
So maybe Colton didn't hear me, though the capitol could just make me louder on tv with a click of a button.
We kept walking for a couple miles before we hear a voice come on over the intercome for the arena.
"Hello tributes, and happy 53rd annual hunger games! There will be a feast tommorow at sunrise by the cornacopia, and may the odds be ever in your favor" the voice says loudly, it echoes throwout the arena's walls.
My allies raise their heads in question, even John seems to forget about Mia for a moment. No other games had feasts so early, since most tributes still have enough supplies from the cornacopia. This announcement was obviously to make a point, and the point was quite obvious.
The voice over the intercome was not Zach.

chapter 24:


I wait for Colton to get back. Mia and John are watching the bugs on the ground, everything is quiet. I wonder what the game makers are up to, they almost never make the arena this quiet. I allow my self to close my eyes, letting myself believe that they had enough blood yesterday, that's when I remember Zach. All the things he said about killing Colton, he was going to do that soon. Maybe he's even trying to right now. How could I have forgotten?!?!
"John! Mia! I'll be right back! Stay here!" I get up and grab two knives. Mia's lips move, probably asking me a question about where I was going, but I'm already sprinting down the path where I last saw Colton go.
"COLTON! COLTON! WHERE ARE YOU!" I scream, not caring about the other tributes, all I cared about was finding Colton.
Maybe I should have been a little more careful.
I feel a big body tackle me into a tree. I try to take it out with one of my knives, but the person wrestles them away from me.
I finnally get a good look at her, Alicia, Colton's district partner. She's part of the careers, so Tom is probably close behind.
"Any last words" I can hear Alicia say, even though the arena was warm, Alicia's voice sent shivers down my spine.
"Please, just do it quickly" I say, preparing for the final blow.
"Oh please Daisy, you deserve all the pain I am about to give you" Alicia taunts.
I just wish my mom kept her promise and wasn't watching this.
she throws me down, I don't even try to get up, it would be useless. I have no weapons and Alicia was much stronger than I am. A strong foot hits me in the stomach, and for a moment, I can't breath.
Alicia just laughs. Maybe she forgets I am a human being like her.
"DAISY!" I can hear Mia shout from about 30 yards away.
Oh why did she follow me? I turn my head and see that John was standing by her side, a knife in both of their hands.
"Mia get away!" I shout, though I can hear her running up.
Mia's feet snap twigs and crunch leaves. I can only guess how far she is away by the sound of her foot steps.
20 yards away
"Mia, be careful!" I hear John shout, staying far away.
10 yards away
Alicia shows no sign of fear, she just tightnes her grip on her sword.
5 yards away, and I see Alice throw her sword.
I hear a yelp.
Then the canon's blast booms across the arena.
