"I lived." he said. "It's fine." He smiled weakly. "Hopefully the next time I see you I won't be handing back another knife." he smiled again and walked back over to the swords.

Cori spotted her District partner also examining the knives, testing them out by gliding their edges across his finger. "District 5 creep annoying you?" he said dryly as a line of blood formed on his finger.

Cori sighed. "You have no idea."

Her District partner smirked slightly. "I know. He's annoying."

She laughed.

"What did he do to you?" said Cori, picking up a knife and glancing at the edges before returning her eyes to her partner.

He shrugged. "Nothing. Yet. But I've been watching him around all the girls. None of them except for maybe 4 look too happy about him."

Cori smiled wryly.

She realized she didn't know her name and cursed herself for it.

"What's your name?" said Cori as she flicked a knife toward a dummy and it landed on the floor. "Sorry. I didn't really pay attention to the Reapings or the..."

"Ray," said Ray. "Don't feel bad. I didn't catch yours either."

Cori felt a rush of relief. "It's Cori."

"How come I haven't seen you around much?" asked Ray, expertly throwing a knife at the dummy. It pierced the neck.

Cori shrugged. "I don't know. I've seen you around, though. You're all the girls ever talk about."

Ray laughed. "No way."

"Yes way," said Cori.

"Well, looks like the only thing they'll whisper about me now is how much I'm so dead." Ray threw another knife and it stuck in the dummy's shoulder.

"Aren't you going to have any confidence in yourself?" asked Cori.

Ray was silent for a while before he finally replied. "Of course I do."
