I would have loved to see them together in the HG. The relationship between Katniss and Heymitch and his background is something that I always felt was not touched on enough while reading CF. A couple more interactions between them would have been nice, because especially after reading the part about the second Quarter Quell I was dying to know some more about him.

If he had gone in with Katniss instead of Peeta for whatever reason I think that the escape plan may have gone smoother than it did. Haymitch wanted alliances, and Katniss didn't. Where Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and Mags were trudging though the forest, I think with Haymitch they would have had a forth of the victors on their team. Possibly dropping Mags, although Finnick would want her with.

This may have ended up going too smoothly with the escape plan, therefore making the Capital suspicious and throwing in a monkey wrench. Or, due to the group size and varying personalities, things would have become very complicated within the group.

With the change of alliance from canon they may have had the ability to kill off the Careers more easily, and maybe avoid the scenario with the lightening tower where they nearly failed. Or the exact opposite, as I'm pretty sure that none of them but Haymitch and Finnick (not sure if he new about the escape plan, I can't quite remember) knew about the escape and other victors may have turned on them.

I'm only a short way in Mockingjay, but I like having the scenario where Peeta is captured after the escape rather than Haymitch (assuming they switch places). It just ends up working out better that way.

Reading about Haymitch surviving through another Games, though, is really intriguing. That, and we get more witty remarks against Katniss
