In contrast to the changes you daresay you enjoy thread I figured I would make a thread specifically for people who want to discuss what they did not like that was changed.
The spoiler alert here should speak for itself.
1. Hated every scene where Seneca and Snow were talking. They felt unnecessary and didn't add to anything. Those precious minutes could have been used to have more character development for Katniss and Peeta.
2. Haymitch only appears to be drunk two or three times and it's not very obvious at all.
3. We don't find out Peeta saved Katniss' life with the bread until halfway through which makes no sense.
4. The game makers seemingly controlling the arena like it's a virtual environment when it isn't (making mutts spawn out of no where when they still need coal). I don't care how technologically advanced they are, if they still need coal I don't think they can just push a button and get a fully grown creature out of nothing.
5. District 12 is brushed over completely. The books spend a good deal of time cultivating the culture of district 12 and the movies barely show it for what it is.
6. WHERE IS MADGE.
7. WHY DIDN'T MADGE GIVE HER THE PIN?
8. Katniss and Peeta don't have enough romantic scenes in the arena for their relationship to be believable... at all.
9. Haymitch does not agree to help them because they earn his respect. Instead he agrees because (at least, it's portrayed this way) they are being brats and he wants them to stop bothering him. He shows no faith in them in the film.
10. Katniss doesn't run over to the window to see the capitol with Peeta. This is small, but significant to me. It was a bonding moment in the book, to show where they both came from and how incredible the capitol seems to them.
11. Starvation is a huge theme in the books. In the movie they never touch upon how shocked Katniss is by the instant food in the capitol. It's a huge part of her personality, so it feels weird to not see it.
12. Katniss and Peeta never have a confrontation in the end.
13. Katniss never drugs Peeta.
14. Lack of character development.
15. Peeta does not lose his leg and we do not see the scene after they are brought up from the arena and Katniss freaks out.
16. Movie never gives us a reason to hate the capitol. No starvation of the districts, no showing their disgusting habits, etc.
The first time I saw this movie, these flaws bugged me a little but I was so excited about seeing one of my favorite series on screen that I let it go. Then I brought a friend who hadn't read the books. They hated the movie and said they can't believe a terrible book series like that got so popular. I asked why they would say that and I realized that if they hadn't left so much out this friend wouldn't have formed that opinion. Their complaints were that the movie dragged on and on yet felt like it had no character development, and that there was no reason to hate this oppressive government and it didn't even seem very oppressive.
Another one of my friends who saw the movie without reading the books had the exact same conversation with me. The movies are apparently awful if you haven't read the books, which sucks. An adaptation should stand well on its own.
