Her father, however, loved his daughter very much and was very picky when it came to suitors. He wanted only the best for her and would always turn away suitors when they came asking. After a while the daughter would lament and wish that she could have a husband of any kind, even if he was old and ugly.
One day a great prince of the mountains came to the lovely daughter's palace and asked her to marry him. He had many servants and many riches which he paraded toward the palace, and his servants were the great bears and tigers and water buffalo which did his bidding as he wished, and he could control the mountains.
The princess saw all this from her window and was delighted. He could be the one! she thought excitedly. Surely father will be pleased with him! And she rushed out to greet him. When the king looked him over he was very satisfied. The prince was great and handsome and powerful, and he had many treasures and riches.
"Do you promise to always take care of my daughter forever as long as she lives and love no one else but her?" asked the king.
"I do," said the prince, smiling. He was very polite and charming and well brought-up.
The king was just about to allow him to take his daughter's hand in marriage when there was a loud sound and the prince of the sea came up, marching with all his treasures and riches and his servants. The great fish of the sea and waves and snakes obeyed his every command. The great lost treasures of the sea were at his disposal.
"I wish to marry the lovely princess of the dragons!" he proclaimed, and stepped up the the king and the princess. He was very arrogant and haughty and had a temper.
The king looked from prince to prince, conflicted. Either prince would be a very good match for his daughter. The princess herself was delighted. Either suitor would make a very fine husband indeed! Finally he asked the princess, "Daughter, which prince do you wish to marry?"
Each prince had his strengths and treasures and it was a very hard choice. After a long moment of thought though the princess chose the prince of the mountains.
"Then a fine marriage it will be," said the king, and welcomed his new son-in-law. The prince of the sea, furious, returned to the ocean in defeat and swore vengeance on the prince of the mountains.
The princess and the prince of the mountains retreated to the prince's palace, which was hidden deep in the mountains. They lived happily for a long time until one day there was a large fanfare and the prince of the sea came marching up the mountainside, furious and with a giant army of sea creatures behind him. Wherever he walked waters flooded the land and the people of Vietnam were starved for many weeks because of it. There was a great famine in the land and the people were miserable. The prince of the seas declared war on the prince of the mountains.
The prince's giant waves flooded the land but could not do much against the great mountains of the other prince. The war lasted for many months until finally the prince of the sea was forced to retreat back into the ocean, tired and defeated by the prince of the mountain. He swore to never give up trying to win the dragon princess's hand though and every year he declares another war on the prince of the mountains, only to lose again in a few months.
And that is why there is the monsoon in Vietnam.
