Grant Gustin as Finnick Odair

Glee’s Grant Gustin has always said he wanted to play Finnick Odair in Catching Fire.  Now he’s confirmed that he actually did audition for the role.

According to The Insider :

But Grant’s fans have plenty of projects to look forward to — not only will A Mother’s Nightmare premiere later this year on Lifetime, but the actor reveals he has officially thrown his hat into the ring to play Finnick in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire! “I have auditioned for the role,” he says, confirming lots of fan desire/speculation. “I don’t think [the producers] know what they’re looking for just yet, but yes, I auditioned for the role.”

So what do you think?  Would you be OK with him playing Finnick in Catching Fire?  Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Matilda says:

I always sort of imagined him when I read the books! I really hope the audition went well and that he will be considered for the part!

  2. KJ says:

I know I will take the heat for this…but NO! Just No!

I think the producers know exactly what they want and he isn’t quite it. I pray they continue to look.

Otherwise, I am right there with Katniss…he isn’t attractive to me.

    • Fayeray says:

I completely agree!!! I really hope he is not what the producers are looking for.

    • Kindra says:

No way! Not only does he not have the acting chops, he is seedy looking. Finnick needs to be manly and drop dead gorgeous. No offense, but this is not someone who stops me in my tracks and he is no where near built enough.

      • KJ says:

I liked your seedy comment and totally agree. I would be watching the screen waiting for the same smirks and snods that he does so well on Glee, to the point that I can’t see him as anything else.

        • katniss773 says:

josh had to gain a lot of muscle to play the role of peeta but he still got the role. And FYI he is soooooooooooooooo drop dead gorgeous.

  3. gia says:

Finnick is supposed to be a man. This guy looks 12. No. All wrong.

    • SilentMockingjay says:

I agree, he looks too young. Finnick is supposed to be 24 (winning at 14 in the 65th games and we are entering the 75th), older then Katniss and Peeta. He looks younger. Just doesn’t seem to fit.

      • Mariah says:

        I totally agree with you(:

        • KJ says:

I think what we are all expecting is a Finnick with more sophistication, more ‘wow’ factor. AND, he has to be able to act, be very physical, and excellent swimmer, able to lead and able to fall completely apart in a convincing way.

This will be the toughest casting decision to be made. Good news is they don’t need their Finnick until the Quarter Quell so, they actually have more time to take for the search. Finnick isn’t required on the first day of shooting in Sept…nice to have, but not required. They could start shooting without a decision on Finnick.

          • Kindra says:

Totally agree. My seedy comment may have been a little out of line and comes from how much I can’t stand his character on Glee. You hit it on the head KJ. No wow factor or the proper physicality.
They don’t always shoot the film in order, so you never know when they will need him. This is a major decision that the fans will be clamoring for, so I hope it is sooner rather than later.

  4. A mad finnick fan says:

W H Y. if lionsgate has any sense at all they will not cast him. THIS IS A MISTAKE.

  5. hailey says:

not bad looking but i think hes looks to innocent to play finnick

  6. Melody says:

He doesn’t look like how I imagined Finnick…

  7. Lauren Mellark says:

With some work… you know building muscle and hair dye and contacts and tanning beds….he could fit the part.

  8. Iily says:

HE GREAT 4 FINNICK JUST PREFECT I THINK HE AWESOME FOR THE ROLE AND cute

  9. Autumn says:

When I first read the book, he was the only person I pictured as Finnick. I understand when people say he doesn’t look the part, but if the producers like him enough, I think he could pull it off.

  10. Melissa says:

No. He’s adorable but that’s the problem. Finnick is supposed to be 24 years old; and look his age. I’m not trying to hate on him. I’m a HUGE Glee fan and he was great on the show. I just don’t see him coming across on-screen as mature enough. Even with physical work; ie hair change and weight gain. But, at the end of the day, it’s the people involved in the actual film making process that should hopefully make the best decision. Not the fans.

  11. Veronica Mars says:

Any hot actor other than Alex Pettyfer! Alex Pettyfer can barely act!!

    • Mock says:

Amen to that! I want someone who knows how to ACT for Finnick, and Alex Pettyfer does NOT have what it takes to play Finnick’s emotional scenes.

  12. KatnissMockingjay says:

He looks way to young!!! All he’ll be if he’s cast is a guy who will be covered in make-up to make him look like Finnick. NO NO NO NO.

The perfect Finnick is James Gaisford (Finnick in the Finnick and Annie web series)

  13. Mariah says:

NO NO NO !! He looks too young to play Finnik ! He doesn’t look like 24 years old, he look way to young ! NO

  14. Tracey says:

Guys, if you’ve actually seen him, he doesn’t look that young. I think he can do it. Don’t be so quick to judge. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if he were cast.

    • Veronica Mars says:

I know right. They need to take a chill pill.

      • Tracey says:

Plus, he said that a year before the movie came out, he read the books, and could identify with the character. He was told that he could be viewed as a possible Finnick character, and a year later, people have been saying the same thing. He’s acknowledged the fact that he would have to buff up and all to play the part. He’s aware of what the character should be like.

    • Lily20434 says:

ikr! he a great actor and give him a chance he read the books and he LOVES them he a great finnick and i AGREE 100%

  15. Lily20434 says:

i Agree 100% he just the person i want to play finnick HE GREAT AND I HOPE HE GET THE PART I THINK HE PERFECT he already read the books n he said he loves the HUNGER GAMES!
he just like the character give him a chance he a great Actor I agree that he makes a great part for finnick

  16. Johanna says:

    No me gusta.

  17. TeamGale says:

Come on, Lionsgate! You thinned out THG way too much in my opinion, so make up for it by casting Grant!

  18. Marissa says:

I think he would be good but definately needs to bulk up if he gets the part. Right now he is too scrawny to pull of that presence Finnick has. But I definately think he could pull off the character.

  19. EBR says:

I don’t really want him for the part. I never really imagined him. I want Alex pettyfer to do it. I just can’t think of Grant Gustin being finnick

  20. noodles2Dmax says:

Nah, nah, nah, I cannot see this happening. I mean, he’s good looking and all but he just doesn’t look mature or (no offense) sexy enough. He looks more like that guy in high school that you’d have a crush on, rather than a sexy, emotionally scarred, mature Hunger Games victor. Sorry, but I vote no.

  21. Chelsie says:

Nope! His whole demeanor is a bit too feminin for Finnick. Like y’all said, he doesn’t have that WOW factor and I can’t imagine him ever being able to pull off Finnick. I would not be a happy camper if he was chosen for the role.

  22. katniss everdeen says:

OMFGGGGGGGGG YES OF COURSE HE WILL BE PERFECT FOR FINNICK

  23. Mock says:

He’s MUCH better than Hunter Parrish, but I don’t think he has quite what it takes to pull off FINNICK ODAIR. I’m still supporting Garrett Hedlund.

  24. Me says:

I would commit suicide. Finnick has to be Jesse Williams, he even has the right eyes

  25. Veronica Mars says:

Oh my Hunger Games, I don’t care anymore! As long as actor they pick for Finnish can actually ACT and is HOT I won’t care. It’s about the finished product.

  26. THG Fan says:

All of you people posting on here are saying that they can dye his hair and bulk up for the role and that is easy to change, but one thing you can not change is the quality of acting. Now, I guarantee I will get a ton of terrible responses, but Grant Gustin can not act. I have watched some of his shows and is always the weakest actor, a liability considering the actor who plays Finnick must be arguably the strongest presence in the next three films. So before you start saying that he would be great for the role, remember that the actor must be able to act, and as far as I am concerned, Grant Gustin can not act. If he is cast, I will officially not see Catching Fire along with the subsequent films, and I am sure that some people have at least some of the same feelings as me. Well enough of my rant, peace.

  27. TT says:

Ya when i heard it was coming out in November i was kinda dissapointed cause im not very patient but i really dont care cause my b-day is in November!! Haha i thought josh was not a good part for peeta but the more i thought about it the better i liked it so i am voting 4 Grant :) i have read the whole series and i think he would be a good Finnick Odair

  28. Roxanne says:

Okay, I don’t understand why people think he is blonde. It says right in the books that his hair is BRONZE. Seriously. I even have two sentences from Catching Fire to prove it:
“Finnick, the handsome bronze haired guy from District 4…”
“Tall, athletic, with golden skin and bronze coloured hair…”
And I’m pretty sure it was mentioned heaps in Mockingjay too. So reread the books and stop going on about how he can’t be Finnick because his hair is “bronze”.
