Harry Potter star Tom Felton on The Hunger Games

| June 6, 2011 | 30 Comments More

Tom Felton is known to Harry Potter fans as the evil Draco Malfoy.  He chatted to 24Frames about the influence the film series has had on the young adult market, believing it’s got a lot to do with a bunch of new “tween” films about to hit our screens.

“I think ['Harry Potter'] certainly helped” pave the way for movies such as “Hunger Games,” Felton said at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, where he was on hand to present new footage from “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”

“I think one of the great things about what ["Harry Potter" book author] Jo Rowling has done is she’s made literacy and reading kind of cool again. And that allows the way for lots of these other franchises to kind of come through,” he said.

  3. loaded Gun beats tributes and peacekeepers says:

This **** is trying to make harry potter seem like it influenced the book which is totally false

EDITED BY MYHUNGERGAMES – I know you say you’re kidding in a later comment, but please, no words like that, OK? :)

  4. Amber says:

I love Tom Felton. (: What he says is true people just need to be opened minded sometimes.

  5. loaded Gun beats tributes and peacekeepers says:

EDIT BY MYHUNGERGAMES – thanks for saying that you were kidding, but I removed the word anyway…hope you understand

  6. Gale rocks! says:

    Whatever.

  7. Renee says:

What a crock. I love HP, but HG is nothing like it. At least it wasn’t some Twilight guy saying this…

  8. Presidant Snow's Lap-dog (Woof) says:

Has anyone noticed that since the Harry Potter books and movies have ended the cast is now saying anything to keep in the news. They just don’t like that something else in taken thier place. Look when Percy Jackson came out, they were all over it saying it was linked to HP and now our own Hunger Games is getting compared. I am sure Mrs Collins didn’t steal everything for her book like JK Rowling did. This artical makes me so angry as it’s saying Harry Potter is the reason we have Hunger Games! I am sure Mrs Collins had the idea for ages.
    Such big heads

  9. HungerGamesFan1 says:

MAN he has gotten hot. And he was saying that books like Harry Potter and Hunger Games have really opened up the world for kids to enjoy their reading more, and also for aspiring authors to reach out and find that they have it in themselves to write a good teen book. He wasn’t bashing HG or Collins. I wanted to clear that up!

  10. morgan says:

what does hehave to do w/ hg he does not belong w/ the hg

  11. HungerForTheGames says:

well what hes trying to say is that harry potter kind of opened the way for book into movie franchises becuz it was one of the most succesful so far ..hes not trying to compare the plot lines or anything like that just saying that hp kindve opened up the way ..something like that but no not the plots or anything no

  12. HungerForTheGames says:

and that it made reading more fun yah

  13. HG4ME says:

  14. HG4ME says:

nvm that link will not work..ill find sumtin else

  15. Emma says:

he’s not saying how hp influenced the book or anything like that, he just means that because the hp movies were such a success, that kinda makes a path for other teen fiction books being turned into movies.

  16. Andrea says:

What he was trying to say is that when JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter, a whole generation of kids started reading again and now kids are more into reading then they were before.

  17. MyHungerGames says:

@HG4ME they are excellent – thanks for the links – I’ll let you know :)

  18. #1 Team Peeta :) :) says:

  21. go peeta!!!! says:

@AJ Ummmmm……. That was not very nice. I’d like to see you do better.

  22. Hunger Games Crazy says:

I do not get why they compare it to other books. It is one of a kind. Even though Suzanne was inspired by a book about a myth. Something to do with sending 12 people every year to face a monster. That is similiar but it was the inspiration. No other book is like it. And lets keep it that way ;)

298 DAYS!!! ANYONE AS STOKED ON LIFE AS I AM MYSELF! …. If I got tickets to the Premiere of it…. I WOULD DIE!!!!! :D NOW I NEED THEM! :) ONE OF THE BIGGEST FANS RIGHT HERE! ^_^

  23. Artemis, Girl on Fire says:

I want him to be Peeta in the Hunger Games. His acting skills, his voice, even his complexion and build and hair-color would work. I wouldn’t mind staring at HIM the whole movie ;) I think he would be a good person…

  24. go peeta!!!! says:

I would want Alex Pettyfer to be peeta. I loved I am number four. Did anyone see THAT move???

  25. Abby says:

He’s not comparing HG and HP at all, he’s just saying that ever since the HP movies came out, people have become more interested in film adaptations of young adult books. Not that HP influenced HG in any way, storywise or anything like that. Also, you can’t deny that HP is a hugely popular series and definitely did get a lot of young people into books, which could very well have led them to picking up series like HG…who knows though? Both are amazing series in their own right and Tom Felton is in no way suggesting that one is superior to the other

  26. PEETA! says:

I think it’s great to have competition(?) talk about the other and give them prase and stuff like that

  27. AHPFan says:

Excuse me, Tom Felton isn’t bashing Hunger Games or anything; he’s just saying how Harry Potter influenced a lot of children to read. And how old are these children now? Teenagers.

Tom isn’t saying anything bad about The Hunger Games, how come a lot of you are bashing Harry Potter now? This is just worthy of being facepalmed.

And a lot of criticism about Harry Potter here really is stupid. Haven’t even read one book by Jo, but already criticising it.
