How many people live in Panem?
You can’t read The Hunger Games trilogy without wondering what the fictional nation of Panem is like. It’s been the subject of much speculation with some trying their hand at drawing out the boundaries of this land set in the future.
What we do know is that it is a country that “rose out of the ashes” of North America after it was destroyed by wars, famine and natural disasters.
Instead of 50 states there are now 12 Districts (or arguably 13) which surround the Capitol.
But how many people live in Panem?
Well the Centives website thought they’d try to extrapolate out some of the facts provided in The Hunger Games to try and determine how many people are likely to be citizens of Panem.
By looking at the coal providing region of District 12, they worked out that Panem is likely to have a population of about 4 million.
And as they point out – with numbers like that, the odds of being reaped into the Hunger Games are certainly not in your favour.

That actually really interesting. They never tell you those statistics in the book and it really makes you wonder what the population size is. They give a feel of the population in district 12 but not overall.
