Mockingjay Midnight Madness
It’s less than six weeks until the release of Mockingjay. Until now we hadn’t heard of any plans for midnight release parties for the book launch, but today we can tell you that some of the bigger independent book sellers have decided to get in on the excitement and throw their doors open on the night of August 23 in anticipation for the August 24 deadline.
The biggest event would have to be at Books of Wonder in New York City. It’s the location of the official launch party for Mockingjay and Suzanne Collins herself will be there.
As they mention on their website …they’re incredibly, extremely, ecstatically thrilled to announce that they’ll be hosting the event.
It all starts on Monday night, August 23 at 8:00pm. The Hunger Games themed celebration will kick off with activities and entertainment varying from face painting, magic and tattoos to jugglers, street performers and tarot card readers. Just before midnight, Suzanne Collins will personally hand stamp each book with a special stamp designed exclusively for her 2010 Mockingjay tour events (apparently a hand injury has meant Ms Collins is unable to actually sign any books).
For those that want to go along here’s how things will work. Books of Wonder will close at 7pm as usual on Monday, August 23rd, then reopen at 8pm. Beginning at 8pm, there will be two lines to check in. One line will be for those who have paid in advance to pick up their vouchers that will be exchanged at midnight for your copy of Mockingjay. The other line will be for those who wish to pay for their copies that night. After paying, those customers will also receive their voucher to be exchanged at midnight for a copy of Mockingjay. Numbers will be given out as you receive your vouchers. However, we should warn you that the pre-paid line will move much faster (since there will be no waiting for people to pay) and so those folks will get to the front of their lines faster and so most likely receive lower numbers. After you have received your vouchers and your number on line, you are free to enjoy all the entertainment and activities until just before midnight, when SUZANNE COLLINS will read. After her reading, we will line people up in numerical order and beginning at midnight, start handing out books in number order for people to get their books stamped by Ms. Collins.
So don’t miss out on this gala event! Going from 8:00pm to 1:30am, the Books of Wonder official Mockingjay launch party is sure to be a night you and your teen readers will never forget.
As reported earlier Borders stores around the US will hold Fan Fest parties on Saturday August 28th – four days after the Mockingjay release date.
So what are you hoping to do on August 24? Let us know if you know of any release parties in your area and what you will be doing to get the book as soon as possible.

Me and my friend are staying up all night hanging around the bookstore waiting to get it. Anyone know of any release parties in Washington (not DC, Washington)?
I’m actually commenting on your new pole: Which character do you hope to see more of in Mockingjay?
This is something I did not even think of before but now that you ask it, my answer is Gale. I am a Team Peeta fan. Gale received a very strong intro for a very short run but so I wonder if I love Peeta so much because he had the “air” time. Very curious if I will switch teams mid game. But I love Peeta’s undying quest to love only Katniss. I’m crazy with anticipation. This pole as given me a lot to ponder.
I might have to create a separate post so that we can discuss it further
I’m going to the Book Of Wonder release party. I’m so excited to see Suzanne Collins herself! I’m getting there early to get a good spot in line, seeing that she has to leave at 1:30, which would mean not everyones book would get to be stamped.
That is so cool – we’re all jealous. Hope you have a blast and please take pictures and send them to us so we can put them up on our site … we would absolutely love that
University Book Store in Seattle, WA is having a release party, starting at 11pm on August 23rd. There will be related prizes and treats and games (you might just have to fight for survival) and trivia. IT WILL BE AWESOME. The books will be available at midnight. Check our blog, website and upcoming Facebook page for more information.

Are there any other areas in New York holding midnight release parties??
Anyone know of a midnight release in the L.A. or Southern Cal area?
Hoping to find a bookstore in San Diego to hold a release party at Midnight. I’m in it to have a HG-themed dinner + all-read party either 24th AM or 25th PM. If we get enough people in San Diego interested, perhaps an indie bookstore will help us out! Any fans out there in SD?
anyone know of any parties in the san francisco/bay area? i’ve been searching for days and am dying to go to one, but can’t find any.
I’m also looking for a midnight release party in the San Diego area but I’m not having any luck :/
any one know of any releases in the columbus, oh area?! i havent been able to find one and i dont think i can wait until morning!
We’ve looked high and low for a Midnight release party in the SF Bay Area. No luck. The best we can find is the Borders parties on the 28th (What’s up with THAT) and Kepler’s Menlo Park on the evening of the 24th. (Better but still no good.)
If anyone hears about a real release party in the Bay let us know. /H
i have been to the party, and it ROCKED!
If you have any photos you’d like to share – we’d love to see them
