More Catching Fire Casting Rumors | Mags and Beetee
It was reported earlier on the Sam Claflin looks to be the frontrunner to be cast as Finnick Odair, but he’s not the only Catching Fire casting rumor today.
Variety is reporting that Oscar winner Melissa Leo and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub are the frontrunners to play Mags and Beetee, respectively. Apparently all three are definitely on the short list for The Hunger Games sequel. But, as they also point out, Lionsgate and all of the actors” respective reps had no comment on the casting.
Here’s what they say about the three actors:
Claflin burst onto Hollywood’s radar when he scored a key supporting role alongside Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” He went on to vie for Kristen Stewart’s affections in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” He’s repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.
Indie veteran Leo has never appeared in a blockbuster movie, though she is currently filming a key supporting role alongside Tom Cruise in Joseph Kosinski’s “Oblivion,” based on the graphic novel from Radical Publishing. She’s repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
Shalhoub is no stranger to studio blockbusters, having appeared in two “Men in Black” films and three “Spy Kids” pics. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

I agree! I had to double check that they actually meant Mags – but I guess a good actor and some make up could pull it off… but it’s still a surprising choice of she does end up getting it.

Tony Shalhoub is perfect for Beetee but she is not Mags. I want Cicely Tyson. SHE is perfect for Mags.

I really wanted someone older for Mags. Someone with more vulnerability. Melissa Leo usually plays strong, take no s*#t characters. I could see her as Coin. But she has the acting chops and with makeup may be able to pull it off.
Really not pleased with Tony for Beetee. I always pictured someone like the guy from Lost and Person of Interest (Michael Emerson). I will always associate Tony with the Monk character or his character from Men in Black.
Let’s really think about this. The character of Mags doesn’t really have ANY dialog. Mostly it is grunting, slurring, etc., due to having had a stroke. Mags is a physical role, not a speaking role.
This is a really bad rumor. She may be auditioning/in talks but it is NOT for Mags. Coin, however, makes perfect sense.

liongates will probably cast a younger actress for mags because of the physical of the role .they will make her look older with make up ,like they did with guy pearce in prometheus.

She would be perfect as Coin, however. Her Oscar speach could be her audition for Coin. Barely broke a smile during the whole thing.

OMG it’s Monk. He would be perfect he is such a good actor and can play the weird misunderstood type. Yay I hope it’s not just a rumor. But I don’t knoow about the lady for Mags. I pictured Betty White. I just love her so much.

And 90. Mags is a physical role with little to no speaking. I don’t see Melissa Leo wanting a non-speaking role. She would be perfect for Coin, though.
He’s absolutely perfect for Beetee but Melissa looks so young. Mags is supposed to be 80 and Melissa is only 50. It’s understandable that they wouldn’t cast someone around 80 cause it’s a somewhat physically demanding role and they have to be in a decent shape but still. I was hoping for Cicely Tyson but I guess we’ll see.
Am I the only one who thought Mags was Black while reading the books…
Mags was only ever described as being in her 80′s, slight in stature — weighing around 70 lbs based on Katniss description when asked to carry her. Walked with a cane, garbled speech as if she had a stroke. Graying hair, lined face. Could be any race but Cicely Tyson fits the description, is 79 and has the ability to be physical even at her age.
The most physical thing Mags does is swim/paddle toward the cornucopia. Then Finnick carries her most of the time. However, if I was Melissa Leo and they thought I was perfect for Mags, I’d be insulted! What next? Jack Black as Finnick?
I hear you and tend to agree but…if you are greater than 60 yrs. of age, and having to swim/bob in an ocean with waves, and spend hours in a jungle with high heat and high humidity…even if someone is carrying you the WHOLE time, it will take a toll. Just ask your grandparents.

keep in mind everyone, that these actors are going to have aton of makeup on so they’ll look more like the characters…they’ll prob make mags look older.
Listen guys, I agree with KJ. These are 70-80 year olds do you really expect them to swim and be able to handle the humidity and heat? Ever heard of heat stroke? I also agree that Hollywood make up artists can do alot of things, including making a 60 year old woman look like an old woman. I’m sure Lionsgate will make a great descion with all the characters. I mean, do far they have done a great job. If they want to make her Mags, then that will be okay with me. The man for Beetee, however I think will be perfect. This is my opinion so, please don’t bless me out.

I always thought of beetee as a small, pale, innocent looking man. One with a small voice so you wouldn’t guess he’s a genius. Yeah?

Personally, I REALLY wish they would get David Tennant. He would be GREAT for Better simply because he is so good at playing a mad inventor-type role, as well as simply nuts character (I reference his role as The Doctor in “Doctor Who” and his role as Barty Crouch in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”), and, since all of the districts are so impoverished, his lanky body type and light skin tone are perfect for the part!

no no no Michael Emerson HAS to be Beetee. Like it is physically impossible that another person could be perfect for that role OTHER than him.
While I don’t disagree with that choice, here is the problem…he has a hit TV show that he is constantly filming, ‘A Person Of Interest’. Did you want to hold the production, and subsequent releases, of any of the Hunger Games movies to wait for his show to end on CBS so that he would be available?

I think that’s a good choice 4 Beetee. The other two……NO!!! Justin Hartley (“Smallville”‘s Green Arrow, NBC’s “Passions”) is PERFECT for Finnick!!!! This guy they got…….HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! PLEASE RE-READ the book and DO BETTER!!!! Even Alex Pettyfer (“Magic Mike”, “I Am Four”) would be excellent, but this guy isn’t even anywhere in the same relm of “Greek God” status……DO BETTER! You tore up the first book…….DO BETTER THIS TIME……Where is Peter Jackson when u need him…..he knew how to follow a book!!!!!!!
