My Hunger Games Cast Countdown – Jena Malone
Welcome to Cast Countdown with Hamilton. Every Wednesday I will introduce a member of the Catching Fire cast and discuss what it is that they will be bringing to the role of their character. Fair warning, just in case you have not yet read the books, there may be spoilers here.
Jena Malone as Johanna Mason
About Johanna Mason: A District 7 victor from a few years prior to the 74th Games, Johanna fooled the other tributes into thinking she was a weakling, only unleashing her devastating fighting skills as the field grew sparse, finishing off those who were left. She’s brash, sarcastic, and without compassion. Overall she’s quite dangerous and despite forming an alliance with her, Katniss never trusts her. In addition to being a seemingly heartless killer, she is also something of a sex object and has no reservations about stripping down in front of Katniss and Peeta the first time they meet. Judging from the time frame, she is likely in her early 20′s. She’s described as having a slight build, wide-set brown eyes, and short spiky hair. Read more about her in Kelsey’s Character Profile.
About Jena Malone: Jena Malone is currently 27 years old, with brown hair, brown eyes, and stands at 5’5″. She’s been professionally acting since 1996 and had her first staring role in 2004′s Saved! as Mary, a teen girl dealing with an unexpected pregnancy while attending a Christian school. She’s also appeared in, among other things, Life as a House, Donnie Darko, Pride and Prejudice (with Donald Sutherland), and last year’s Sucker Punch, as Rocket. In addition to acting, Malone is also a musician, releasing songs under the name “The Shoe.”
Though I have seen both Life as a House and Donnie Darko, I do not remember Malone’s roles in those films very well. I did see Saved! and Sucker Punch, though, in both of which she is featured quite prominently. In Saved! she plays Mary, who is a young girl dealing with an unexpected pregnancy and the many complicated emotions that accompany such a situation, creating a complex character. Her part in Sucker Punch is a bit more straight forward – Rocket is a young woman who will do anything and everything to protect her younger sister. While neither part is a mirror of Johanna Mason, they show Malone’s ability to portray both complicated emotions in a vulnerable situation (something which Johanna is obviously very good at, even if much of it is an act in and of itself), and brutal badass. Combine those characters and we have our Johanna. It’s important both of these aspects of the character are completely convincing, and I’m confident in Malone’s ability to pull each off flawlessly. And hey, her initials are J. M. It must be a sign.

Jena Malone rocks and she will be a fantastic Johanna Mason! My favorite casting choice of the newbies so far.
I loved the Sucker Punch movie… didn’t realise Jena Malone was Rocket before!
Wasn’t Rockets sister trying to protect her not the other way round?
