NextMovie weighs in on Who Should Direct Catching Fire
Though the breaking news report, that director Gary Ross will not be directing Catching Fire, is yet to be confirmed by Lionsgate, NextMovie is getting a jump start at looking for new potential directors to take the directors seat for The Hunger Games sequel. Here are just a few of the directors on their list.
Steven Soderbergh
We’ve already gotten a taste of what director Steven Soderbergh can bring to the “Hunger Games” fold, as he did second unit work on the first installment and brought forth that nail-biting revolution in District 11 sequence. So, we have little doubt that Soderbergh could ably carry on the tone, message and feel of the franchise. Our friends at Hollywood Crush dig him as the next in line as well. Only problem is, he’s got his hands full with ”The Side Effects.”
Peter Jackson
If he could squeeze it into his very busy ”The Hobbit” schedule, director Peter Jackson would be an excellent choice for “Catching Fire.” Not only is he a proven book-to-film aficionado by way of “The Lord of the Rings” series, but he’s also an actor’s director and he can seriously grapple with the necessary CGI for the film. However, money was among the issues with Ross, and we can’t imagine Jackson wouldn’t cost Lionsgate double whatever Ross wanted.
Christopher Nolan
“The Dark Knight Rises” director Christopher Nolan really knows how to infuse the bigger picture into visually stunning movies. Not to mention, he’s got je ne sais quoi with franchise material and he’s an accomplished writer as well. He could easily transform the “Catching Fire” script into something large. What’s questionable, however, is whether he could echo the sentiment of girl power “The Hunger Games” has.
Ridley Scott
When it comes to gritty action movies, no one can deny the power of director Ridley Scott. And he’s already proven his muster in combat-arena-style films with “Gladiator.” Scott’s one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood, though, so the chances of nailing him for “Catching Fire” are probably pretty slim.
Other names on their list are David Boyle, David Slade, Rupert Sanders, Debra Granik, David Yates and Brad Bird.

Peter Jackson!
And why isn’t Gary Ross directing the next movie? :O
“Harry Potter” (sequels five through eight) director David Yates seems like a good fit if he is available. He knows his way around good real-looking special effects, an area I think Ross stumbled on. He’s got experience with young actors, And he doesn’t use those annoying hand held cameras!
Roland Emmerich! Hello, Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012…all high action movies. The man is great at what he does. Or for a darker feel (Which is what I was hoping for) Paul W.S. Anderson of Resident Evil fame. I wasn’t really thrilled with Gary Ross’ camera work, to be honest.
I don’t think David Yates would be a good director for Catching Fire at all. He did not film very well with Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix, and with only slight improvements in the next 3 Harry Potter movies he directed.
I think a lot of the crit. on him was how he ‘shortened’ and cut out much of the story of the H.P. films. But he kind of had to, since the books are so long. It’s said that a movie can show about 100 pages of a book per hour of screen time.
H.G. was 263 or so pages, the movie was 2 hrs, 20 mins, so most of it was in in there. the other H.G. books are all less than 300 pages, so that shouldn’t be a problem either.
The look and feel of the H.P. movies he did were all great, imo. I liked how he took them to the ‘darker/scarier place’ w/out turning off the younger audiences or making them R rated.
Well, whichever director does “Catching Fire”, he’s going to have to go grand, larger than life. This second part calls for more action and CGI. We will meet both the fit Mentors who survived the past reaping and the wiley, but not so fit Mentors from past reapings. The battles will be larger scale, the tension has to be cranked up several levels and Pres. Snow will finally show his true colors, especially when he vists Katniss and leaves his snow white rose. The director has to go “Big” or stay home.
if you saw hellboy u would know why he should be the directer of hunger games he will make it biger than life the first hunger games gray ross came up with sucked ass big time because he left some many good parts out and the auther was there to look over things so mad wen i saw the movie they left out a lot of parts that needed to be in the movie a lot of people were pissed i know me and my friends were
I am really not a huge fan of David Yates. At all. Infact, he is my least favorite director out of all these. Please, dear lord, anyone but Yates. I understand how difficult putting the Harry Potter books into movies was, I truly do, being a HUGE fan myself. But I feel like Yates was so loose when it came to changes to the plot and story. I don’t want that to happen to Catching Fire.
i dont know who should direct, but i do hope whoever does can mimic Gary Ross’ filming because he was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn’t really like it if some new director came along and put in loads of effects; the HG isn’t all about that. also, i hope whoever directs can actually get in all of the facts from the book because in HG movie, they made the start of the film with the mockingjay pin at the hob, and it didn’t really mak sense o me; madge should have still given it to katniss!!!
Peter Jackson would be such a great director! He’s got all the skills for Catching Fire. Another bonus?- He’s a New Zealander! Woopwoop, Kiwis rock!
I didn’t really favour the camera style of Gary Ross. I wish Steven Speilberg was availible… The first movie was really great, but it went a little too fast. I wish the sequence with Katniss trying to find water was longer, and the goodbye to Gale after the reaping. If people had gone to the movie without reaing the book, they probibly would’ve been confused because of all the untied ends. Anyways, if you had read the books, you could fit in all the missing pieces. It was pretty good if you had read the book.
