It seems like we’ve been waiting on this news forever now and I think most people have assumed by now that the rumors are true.  Well, Lionsgate has officially announced that Sam Claflin is indeed our Finnick Odair!  See the official press release below.  What do you think?  Does Sam live up to your expectations?

Sam Claflin is Finnick Odair

SAM CLAFLIN CAST AS FINNICK IN LIONSGATE’S THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Santa Monica, CA, August 22, 2012- Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Sam Claflin has been cast in the role of Finnick in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. Charasmatic and clever, Finnick was a District 4 Hunger Games victor when he was fourteen.

After breaking out in his role as the romantic lead in last year’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Claflin starred in the box office smash SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN playing Prince William alongside Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth.   He recently finished filming THE QUIET ONES opposite Jarred Harris, and MARY & MARTHA,  in which he co-stars with Hilary Swank.

    First comment? Anyway, congrats, man!

    • Amy says:

Now that I have the first comment already (Because I’m an internet troll and stuff), And may the odds be ever in your favor, Sam Claflin.

  2. Sisalicious21 says:

I knew it! My friend told me yesterday and I was just waiting for it to be official.

  3. Diddy says:

I am beyond disappointed. It’s not even about me wanting some other actor to play him, it’s about Sam not being ANYTHING like Finnick. I mean, I see this is kind of an unpopular opinion but I see nothing attractive about him and that’s how one would recognize Finnick, by his good looks. I also hear he’s a terrible actor so.. I am officially not looking forward to the Finnick scenes, which is sad because he is one of my favorite characters.

    • Jade says:

      I agree with you completely!

    • RebeccaB. says:

Sam Claflin isn’t very attractive, I’ll give you that. But what did you expect? Of course your ideal Finnick wouldn’t be cast. Not everyone will be okay with all castings, and if you want to enjoy the movie for what it’s worth—an adaptation, it won’t really matter. If you don’t want your image of Finnick to be ruined, then do not watch the final movies. Stick to the books—but I personally think that if he was good enough to get the part out of many others who auditioned, we should trust Lionsgate, Lawrence, and Collions. They know what they’re doing and they don’t need fans’ input, really. The acting is what matters most, looks come second.

If one casting is going to F-up the movie for you in general, like I said before, spare everyone’s time (and your own time) and don’t watch it. Don’t buy a ticket, don’t check out casting information. Let’s all hold our judgement until the movie. Quarrel then.

      • RebeccaB. says:

        *Collins

      • Mark says:

        EXACTLY!

      • i love peeta mellark says:

ikr he is not good looking or anything like i pictured finnick :/

      • Diddy says:

I never expected them to ever find someone as attractive as Finnick is described but for me, he is the opposite of attractive, reason why I was upset about that part. And I already mentioned that I’ve heard he is a terrible actor, the other reason why I was so upset with this choice. If it turns out that he can pull it off and that he’s actually a good actor then I’m gonna be perfectly fine with seeing him as Finnick, but if what I’ve heard is true then I’m gonna be even more disappointed.

I didn’t say it was gonna f-up the movie, I said that I’m not looking forward to the Finnick scenes, but I’m still going to enjoy the movie because of the other amazing actors they picked and because of the story, of course.

      • Cali says:

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. i’ve been trying to tell this to all the haters out their. They ruin our amazing Fandom.
        PREACH IT GIRL.

  4. Mel11 says:

I am soo happy! I think he’s perfect for the role:)

  5. Elizabeth says:

I didnt picture finnick anything like sam so im a little bit disapointed. :( i was hoping for armie hammer.

  6. Alina says:

he is SOOOOO not good for this part… why him anyway?

    • Amy says:

Exactly… why him? There must be a reason, right? Something the casting director knows and we don’t, perhaps? Maybe he gave an audition better than anybody else’s? Because this is the only reason I can think of.

Let’s give the man a chance, shall we? Because one day Jen and Josh were in his place and now they’re king and queen of the fandom.

      • SilentMockinjay says:

I agree…when Jen and Josh were first cast for Katniss and Peeta I remember the counts of people not being happy but look at them now…
…I say we see where this goes, I have heard he was good in Snow White and the Huntsman so maybe there is hope. Finnick is my favorite character so I am just hoping that Lionsgate wont drop the ball on his character.

    • Jessica says:

How do you know that? Cause you talk like you actually know this for a fact. I suppose you sat through every single one of his auditions for this part? No? Good, then you can hold your judgement until you see the movie.

  7. EBR says:

NOOOOOO! I really didn’t want him. He is not at all like what I pictured Finnick as being!

  8. hungagamess says:

He’s not who I wanted (to be honest I’ve never heard of him) but I can kind of see him as Finnick. Plus, he had to have been perfect or he wouldn’t have gotten Suzanne Collin’s stamp of approval. I have high hopes for Sam

  9. Rosie says:

Congrats! So happy he got the role! Really exited about their amazing casting so far! Well done! :) xx

  10. Veronica Mars says:

Better start working on that six pack, Sam! The Odds are Definatly in your Favor. I think you are hot! Congrats!!!

  11. TridentLover42 says:

I think it’s great that he got this part. I’ve waited SOOO long to see who would play Finnick and I’m glad he got the role. He was REALLY good in Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides. I CAN’T WAIT TILL CATCHING FIRE!!!!!!!! :)

  12. Mark says:

Great casting oonce again! :D If not my initial choice I would have pictured someone who looked almost exactly like him, so I totally see him as Finnick already!

  13. Danielle says:

Ugh no offense to him but he looks NOTHING like finnick. He is no where dreamy and super attractive enough. I know acting obviously had to play a part in the casting but I’m sure one of the actors who actually looked like finnick was Atlesst almost as good enough as him for the part. I am very disappointed in this and in the choice of jena Malone. I hope Francis Lawrence is not going to ruin the movie cause so far I am not a fan of his decisions.

    • Cali says:

      NEWSFLASH.
He doesnt pick the actors primarly. Its Suzanne Collins. you knwo the women who CREATED the character. SHE out of everyone knows how he is supposed to look like. You think you have a better desicion? Go talk it out with The author herself. Tell me how that goes for ya.

    • Marie says:

Saw the movie. He’s a huge disappointment. He didn’t look it, and couldn’t act it either. At least this is what I think. And I was already expecting the worst…

  14. Emily says:

For the people who are not happy. There is a thing called hair dye. Don’t judge him until the movie comes out. I think he will do great.

  15. katniss everdeen says:

Personally I really want them to cast President Coin in Catching Fire because it would be a great parallel if CF ended the exact same way THG did, but instead of President Snow watching Katniss and Peeta back in 12, it was President Coin watching Katniss get taken up by the hovercraft.
    OR–
what if towards the end of catching fire like right after katniss shoots the arrow into the arena
there’s like a slow motion play by play
    Effie getting arrested
Haymitch and Plutarch hauling ass to get the surviving tributes out of there
    Reactions in District 12
and Snow like breaking glass in his office
PLEASE SPREAD THIS IF YOU THINK ITS A GOOD IDEA. We should let the lionsgate know!!!!
    and of course, sam clafin will be a good finnick (;

    • SilentMockinjay says:

I love that end, to see the play by play of what is happening to who would be amazing in my opinion.

    • Anna says:

that gave me the chills just thinking of that happening at the end! i think that’d be pretty cool! I can’t wait to see how Catching Fire comes out!

  16. Cel says:

Not how I imagined him… but I’m sure he will do great :D They wouldn’t have chosen him if he didn’t do well.

  17. Brandie D says:

I think most of y’all will feel better when you see the catching fire cast as their actual characters .
I had doubts about the hunger games cast at first initially I didn’t think Josh or Jennifer looked like the characters I imagined in my head , but once I seen the official photos I was hooked . They are right for there parts and their acting proved it .
So just releax and give him a chance , he was picked to do this role for a reason .
    Besides he’s pretty attractive , so that’s a plus :)

  18. Snow says:

He may not be what I imagined, but he’ll do. I agree with the fact that the casting director prolly had a good reason to put him as Finnick, so, I bet he’ll be gr8! We only can w8 and see when the movie comes out! Right ppl? ^u^

  19. Kindra says:

Congrats to him, but I just don’t see the broad shouldered, muscular, drop dead gorgeous man I pictured when reading the book. Maybe it’s just the pic you chose, but he looks really wounded & while he has to come across wounded at some point, he is an egomanaic (I’m too sexy for my shirt) for alot of Catching Fire (if I recall correctly – it has been awhile). Granted, I have not seen him act & he may be brilliant. Just thanking God it’s not Armie Hammer.

  20. TeamPeeta says:

He is exactly what I picture Finnick as. I was worried they were going to pick someone who just wasn’t right for the part, but I think he will make an AMAZING Finnick!

  21. Sarsie says:

Aww no, I’m really bummed about this! I was really routing for Garrett Hedlund! My excitement for this movie has gone down a peg…

  22. Abby Ollila says:

YES!!! I wanted him to be finnick SO bad! CONGRATULATIONS! YOURE PERFECT FOR FINNICK!

  23. gino says:

Obviously everyone knows he is going to nail this role acting wise. But for a character like Finnick who is known for beauty, i don’t know i just don’t see it yet! I better just keep my mouth shut because i have not seen any of the changes they will make on him. I hope he gets a tan because he is pale, they dye his hair, then they give him a sexy haircut. I loved him in Pirates of the Caribbean so I’m sure with the appearance changes he will exceed anyones expectations of Finnick.

  24. MADZ says:

he”ll do okay:) just hope they make him more like the character he’s supposed to be!

  25. Katniss9 says:

i knew it!!! BUT NOT HAPPY!!

  26. Michelle says:

I hope they can do wonders with makeup and lighting because he’s not even close to the stunningly handsome, auburn haired Finnick described in the books.

  27. Krissy says:

    JUST FREAKING OUT! OMG
    I CANT. BUT. WHEN?

AH! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR FOREVER! :::::::::::))))))

    :):D:P;):):D:P;):):D:P;) ♥ ♪♫♪♫

  28. Veronica Mars says:

    He gives me fever!

  29. Stace says:

I don’t know why, but when I read about Finnick i always imagined him to look like Alex Pettyfer.. so this is a bit of a disappointment. But I trust that they made a good decision; he was actually pretty good in Pirates of the Caribbean. I hope he does the character justice! :)

  30. Peeta rocks says:

So they ruin katniss and Finnick for me…

  31. Isabella says:

I trust Lionsgate that he is good enough acting wise but….NOOOOO HE IS NOTHING LIKE I IMAGINED FINNICK!!! NOT ALL THE MAKEUP IN THE WORLD COULD MAKE HIM LOOK AS HANDSOME AS FINNICK IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!!

  32. fabi says:

Oh, God! I’m seeing Jennifer lawrence cast reaction all over again! Guys if he were a terrible actor, as many of you say, I don’t think that they would’ve cast him. So please just wait and see. I bet that he will turn out as good as jennifer did.

    • Kait says:

Exactly!!! When I first saw Jennifer, she looked nothing like I had imagined Katniss, but within the first few minutes of the movie, her outstanding acting skills proved that they couldn’t have picked anyone better. Sure, Sam Claflin doesn’t look a whole lot like most of us imagined Finnick. BUT, how much he looks like the character is a very small, almost nonexistent, part of the casting process, especially since it is so easy to make modifications to someone’s appearance. What really matters, though, is if he really IS Finnick, if he absolutely without a doubt, can BE the part. And obviously he can since they cast him. I had my doubts in the first movie but all of the acting turned out to be phenomenal. So everyone, just give him a chance, I am sure he will be great.

  33. kanbat says:

I know guys!! everybody was waiting for Finnick to be so Handsome and beautiful…. but i think that Finnick is more than a handsome man!! his a pure and lovely person.. and I think San is going to be awesome…
people always are going to complain.. but let me tell you something.. when Jenn was cast as Katniss a lot of people complain and Jenn did a wonderful Job as Katniss… Congrats San …

  34. KJ says:

I think he will make up for everything with his personality and acting ability. He is not as tall as I imagined Finnick but he can certainly work out, get the muscles, have his hair high lighted with red, remove the body hair, etc. The stylists and personal trainers have some job security for awhile.

He’ll be great. Everyone will be eating their words. After you see CF and go back and re-read the book…you won’t be able to see anyone else.

Just wish we could see the end product by the end of this year…instead of next! But counting blessings that the movie is being made and we know when it will release.

  35. Hunger Games, the movie sucked compared to the book says:

Guys, stop complaining, you don’t even pay attention to the way people act, like sam, he’s an amazing actor, watch snow white, pirates, at one point in snowwhite in the huntsman, he acts very sudductive, alot like finnick, its not how they look, its how they act

    • KJ says:

Kudos to you! You have been reading your General Science materials on geology. Subductive means ‘A geologic process in which one edge of one crustal plate is forced below the edge of another.’ Like when there is an earthquake and mountains erupt.

I think the word you wanted is seductive which means ‘Tending to seduce; alluring: “his sad and fastidious but ever seductive Irish voice” ‘ AND with that word, I agree. It is his personality that will win everyone over to his version of Finnick.

  36. Phyllis says:

I really wanted Garrett Hedlund to play Finnick, I just know he would’ve done a great job so I’m a little disappointed…
Although I’m willing to give Sam a chance because he did well in Pirates of the Carribean.

  37. Cali says:

You guys. Finnick is more than looks. He’s a tortured soul who is hopelessly in love with a annie. He has more meaning than just a Hunk that walks around district 4. He stands for strength, he stands for courage, sacrifice, undying love, wisdom. He’s someone you can’t knock down because he’s strong metally and physically. Just read his quotes. “it takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart” He has been through horrific things, such as being forced to be a sex toy in the capital while he loves a poor mad girl back home. Finnick has been teared and pulled to pieces, yet he remians standing, he’s strong for himself and for Annie. You people that hate Sam for his looks are just CAREERS. you know nothing. Like how the one direction fandom has “directionaters” (the bad ones) our fandom has “careers” those who know nothing and cant appericate the true meaning of this fandom thats setting sparks around the world. Finnick says “i darg myself out of the nightmares each morning and find there’s no relief in waking” He’s a beat up soul, He stands for so much. He stands FOR HOPE. and Im confident Sam can play this charcater we as “Mockingjays or Panemanics” (the good fans)all know and love. SO SAM, MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR.

Remider: i really want to start this so spread the word.
Careers = the evil “fans” that cant apperciate the true meaning of our fandom. “bandwagoners” closely related to “directionators.”
Mockingkjays/Panemanics = The good fans that are true to their fandom and know everything. “real fans” closely related to “directioners” the good fans.

    • Amy says:

Well said. Finnick is not just a pretty boy, people, learn it! If he was just the pretty boy of the place, how did he become the fan favorite? I’m sorry, I’m not usually someone to judge people’s mentality for their opinions, but I have to say this: If someone loves Finnick just because he’s the most attractive man in the series, then they’re not so different from the portrayal of the capitol people in the novel. Sorry.

Someone on another forum just ranted about Sam being Finnick in a comment, but that wasn’t my problem with it. Here is my problem: At the end of her reply, she says, “Oh well, I guess it will just make it easier for me to not be upset when he dies in Mockingjay” and I’ve copied the quote as is. Imagine this: If the actor wasn’t pretty enough/good enough, she wouldn’t be as upset about Finnick’s death. I have no comment even, I didn’t even try to reply to her on that forum in fear of losing my nerve.

Some people are treating Finnick and his actor like a piece of meat, already. Wow. We’re not so far from Panem, are we?

  38. Emily says:

Everybody read this article! It really put me at ease. (Not that I was totally against him being Finnick. I think he’s a good actor.)
    http://victorsvillage.com/2012/08/22/play-it-again-sam/

  39. TridentLover42 says:

I like him as Finnick, but I have another question on my mind. Who is going to play young Haymitch? If they show Peeta and Katniss watching Haymitch’s games, then their going to need a young Haymitch. Honestly, I think James Gaisford would be good in that role. He played young Haymitch in a MainStay Productions take on the second quarter quell. I think he was really good. Am I wrong? Here’s the link:

    • KJ says:

Honestly? I thought both him and the blonde playing Maysilee both looked WAY to well fed. Neither looked hungry and down trodden. Unless they are careers, they shouldn’t look that healthy.

Besides, with the short time table and the fact that tape already exists…who says they won’t use that anyway?

      • TridentLover42 says:

They could use that, but I don’t think they would. There are probably a whole lot a business like stuff involved that stops them from using it. And, I understand your point about them looking too healthy, but I’m sure that could be different for the movie. :)

    • Brandie D says:

I agree with you . He would make a great young haymitch . He even looks some what like woody harrelson .

  40. nicole says:

he looks nothing how i imagined finnick, but i might get used to him after a while if he does good in the movie then the odds would be in his favor! :)

  41. kbnm says:

he is a terrible finnick!!!! i was soo excited to see who played him and i am sooo disapointed. he isn’t even attractive and finnick is suposed to b gorgeous! i would rather see the guy who is playing gloss play finnick. at least he is attractive! Sam wasn’t even a good actor in pirates 4 and snow white. he seems too shy and not obnoxious!! :(:( he better surprise me and do better than i think he will! i love finnick tooo much!!!

  42. kbnm says:

well… maybe he just needs a haircut, spray tan, and get some muscles (:

  43. kbnm says:

i just hope he does a good job acting

  44. Kat (London) says:

Sam is so much more attractive and charismatic than any of the guys who competed for the role. So what if his hair is dark, Jennifer is a blond…. And if you didn’t picture Finnick like that, well who cares!

I am very happy that none of the dumbass blond, bulky guys got picked. Their charisma is non-existent, the only exception being Gareth but he turned the part down. And while I really like him he is not half as attractive as Sam.
Sam will be perfect as Finnick, Lionsgate will make sure he looks the part (hair colour, tan etc) but he will bring Finnick alive with a quirky smile and his charm. That’s what none of the other guys had.
Watch an interview with him on you tube and you can see he is the perfect Finnick.

  45. shelby:) says:

Sam is not attractive and i can imagine Finnick as a very hot guy but this just makes me not so not looking forward for the movie now:(

    • Marie says:

I agree with you completely. There’s something about the way he carries himself, he’s supposed to be good looking but he lacks the attitude of someone who is. It’s like he’s all ego and no brain. I mean, not enough to be Finnick. I loved the movie, but the way he pulled off Finnick made me so sad.

  46. Marie says:

Usually when I expect the worst, it helps alleviate the disappointment I feel. I love the movie, but I couldn’t like Finnick at all. It was such terrible acting, he looked so detached, and like he was concentrating more on trying to look good most of the time, that he came on too shallow for a character as complex as Finnick. It’s like he doesn’t even know what he was doing… And I know this is mean, but he’s just not Finnick, he’s too ordinary and unspecial, and dumb looking to be Finiick. He’s the only one who ruined the movie for me. Sorry. Just my opinion.
