Confirmed: Philip Seymour Hoffman officially offered Catching Fire role
The big news broke yesterday thanks to Variety’s Jeff Sneider, that Philip Seymour Hoffman had been offered the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
While there’s still no comment from Lionsgate The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that he has indeed received an official offer to play the Head Gamemaker in Catching Fire. They say that the offer formally went out on Monday, the same day Hoffman ended his 18-year association with his agency, Paradigm.
While Plutarch Heavensbee plays a small, but crucial role in Catching Fire (check out the character profile here), you’d have to imagine that with a power house like Hoffman in the part, that the role will be much bigger. I guess as the story is told from a number of points of views, there’s a lot more scope to flesh out the character in a similar way to Wes Bentley’s Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games.
We’d love to know what you think of this news. Do you think he’s the right person for the part? I give it a big thumbs up.

Perfect!
I reaaaaally hope he takes it! He’s an amazing actor! And can totally pull off the sort of quirkiness that I always imagined Heavensbee would have.
A little makeup and shave he will be purfect, right?
He’s almost perfect for the role. I hope he accepts! He would be an amazing addition to the already amazing returning cast! Casting for Catching Fire is looking very promising.
Yes!! He’s one of my very favorites! I hadn’t thought of him before, but he’ll be fabulous – hope he takes it!
I always imagined Christopher Heyerdahl as Plutarch – but Philip will be perfect!
I always imagined Christopher Heyerdahl as Plutarch – but Philip will be perfect! I actually haven’t even heard of him since he was being considered, but I’m sure he’ll do great and I’m just glad they’re putting Plutarch in the movie!
