Steven Soderbergh Doing Second Unit Shooting on The Hunger Games
News today that Oscar winning Director Steven Soderbergh is directing the second unit of The Hunger Games movie.
The report is out on indieWIRE’s Playlist with claims that Soderbergh has been spotted on the set of The Hunger Games. The news went around the twittersphere with production designer Eddie Mills apparently tweeting his excitement that Soderbergh was in the house. The most direct news came from engineer Chrys Blackson who apparently posted, “Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!”
The folks at indieWire decided to check it out. Their sources have confirmed that Soderbergh is indeed working on The Hunger Games. They point out that the news is not such a huge surprise knowing that Soderbergh and Gary Ross have been friends for years:
Soderbergh produced “Pleasantville,” while Ross has often taken a look at Soderbergh’s scripts. Another connection comes in the shape of Phil Messina, a production designer on “Hunger Games” who has also worked on Soderbergh’s “ErinBrockovich,” “Traffic,” “Solaris,” “The Good German,” “Che: Part Two” and ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy of films. As for Soderbergh’s participation on “Hunger Games” it was required no more than Ross asking for him to come aboard.
