Taylor Swift - The Hunger Games

Taylor Swift has revealed on Twitter that she will be on The Hunger Games soundtrack.   Her track called Safe and Sound featuring the Civil Wars is now available through  iTunes

It’s quite a haunting and beautiful acoustic song.

Not long after tweeting the link to the song, #safeandsound became the top trending topic on Twitter in the U.S. and No. 2 worldwide. It was certainly a surprise that Taylor Swift was going to part of The Hunger Games soundtrack.

Let us know what you think in the comments below.  We’d also like to know at what point of the movie you think this will be played?

Here’s the lyrics: (apologies if I misheard any of them)

I remember tears streaming down your face when I said I’d never let you go

When all those shadows almost killed your light

I remember you said, don’t leave me alone

But all that’s dead and gone and past tonight

Just close your eyes

The sun is going down

You’ll be alright

No-one can hurt you now

Come morning light

You and I will be safe and sound

Don’t you dare look out your window

Darling everything’s on fire

The war outside our door keeps waging on

Hold on to this lullaby

Even when music’s gone…gone

Just close your eyes

The sun is going down

You’ll be alright

No-one can hurt you now

Come morning light

You and I will be safe and sound

Just close your eyes….

You’ll be alright

Come morning light

You and I will be safe and sound

  1. Rachel says:

I think this will be played after she talks with gale and Peeta’s father and they are getting on the train to the capital!!!! At the beginning it says “when i said i’d never let you go,” and “I remembered when you said don’t ever leave me alone,” so yes. or when she leaves peeta to get his medicine… but you know… either or. The song is beautiful.

  2. Jabber jays says:

omg omg omg i was screaming when i heard this 2 of my fav people ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no way ahhh this song is beautiful this would be a beautiful peeta and katniss in the cave scene i can just see them in there

  3. Alley says:

Its a beautiful song and i could really see it being played at the ending of the movie when Peeta finds everything out and they have to get off the train together, i could also see her walking n the woods to this song but another thought is when she blacks out from getting stung? just because its so haunting and different…..

  4. MyHungerGames says:

Wow @Alley I can see that … the closing credits.
Although there’s a few spots where it would work, but I love that idea that it might end the movie

  5. Tyler Gordon says:

I’ve never been a fan of Swift, but I’ve just read the lyrics, and it sounds perfect for The Hunger Games. I’ll have to give it a listen tomorrow and then I’ll let you know my entire opinion. Thinking about movies though, music with lyrics aren’t normally played in dramatic or deeply emotional moments, it’s usually a score. So, maybe this will be our end credits song? Guess we won’t know until the big day! SUPER STOKED! :D

    • MyHungerGames says:

@Tyler I have never really listened to any of her music so not a fan, but not not a fan either if you know what I mean. This song works really well for the movie. I think it’s a good Katniss song – but I’m not sure who she’s singing it to. Prim? Rue? Gale? Peeta?
      Can’t wait to find out

  6. Tyler Gordon says:

Yeah I understand. It’s definitely Katniss. I think it’s directed toward Peeta. Who else could it be really and make the most sense? Also, you guys should let some fans interact on D13 Radio. I’ve listened to both episodes and I’m really interested in giving to the HG community. :)

    • MyHungerGames says:

      @Tyler I think it’s Peeta too.
It would be good to be able to have fans interact with the podcast but right now we’re pretty new to the whole thing but send us an email anytime with any suggestions etc :)

  7. Tyler Gordon says:

Will do! I hope the podcast lasts a long time! I love it! I’ll stay active. How can I let you know of news items that you might miss? I found some the other day. By the way, Myhungergames was the first and still my favorite HG news site. Keep up the great work!

  8. Rainbow says:

I agree with @Allley, i think that would be so beautiful and heart wrenching. I hope that is where they decide to put it, it would make sense, seeing the hurt in his eyes, and hearing the beautiful song. The other place i thought it might fit is when she goes to get his medicine at the feast, but i plays as she is running back through the forest with her head bleeding, and keeps playing as she injects peeta with the medicine and it fades out as shee passes out. I think that would be good too!

  9. MyHungerGames says:

@Tyler send us an email to admin@myhungergames.com – always love to hear from anyone with news – or anything really :)
And thank you…that’s a really nice thing for you to say x

  10. shmeevos says:

I totally agree with u guys but i think maybe after rue dies as she walks away? but yh its fab and it made me want to cry.

  11. Jess says:

I dunno maybe as she’s sitting on the cornucopia and Peeta is dying and she can hear Cato screaming beneath her?

  12. slasher7 says:

Two of my favourite things (Hunger Games and Taylor Swift)
    together!!!
btw I think that song is for Rue’s death scene :(

  13. Cara says:

I agree with @slasher7 and @shmeevos. I can really picture this song as Katniss cover’s Rue’s dead body with flowers and as she walks away. The lyrics fit sooo perfectly! So excited!

ONLY 90 days, 11 hours, 54 minutes and 42 seconds.

  14. McKenna says:

This is a great song. It made me cry. Im usually not a Taylor Swift fan but this song is sooooo good and sad and just……..wow! luv it.
    8^)

  15. McKenna says:

I think that this could be Rue’s death scene, or the scene when Katniss drugs Peeta to get him the medicine at the feast. I also think that it would be cool if it played at the ending credits. 8^)

  16. Hamilton says:

I could see this over top a montage of Katniss taking care of Peeta in the cave, going to get the medicine, etc. There’s also always the possibility that it is not in the movie at all – there are often songs “inspired by the movie” on soundtracks that are not part of the actual score.

  17. Caitlin says:

Wow when i heard this song i screamed for like 5 minutes.
I can totaly see them playing this in maybe the cave but defanatly at the very end of the games when they are being lifted out of the arena and Peeta collapes, the entier scene there until Katniss is back at the training center and is put in sedation

  18. Ayse says:

This song is so unique and original, sounds haunting but still comforting and peaceful. The tone keeps calm the whole way through the song, its so beautiful. Definitely goes well with The Hunger Games.

I think this song will be played when Katniss and Peeta come together after they discover they can team up, so… the cave scene during their first kiss.

Ah, the movie is going to be LEGENDARY! :)

  19. DB says:

I can see this playing when Katniss and Peeta are in the cave or when they battle it out on the cornicopia with Cato when finally it’s announced that only one player can win the games….it’s so haunting and deep; simply beautiful. I can imagine them staring into each other’s eyes and wondering what to do, i can see Katniss pull out those berries and hand some to Peeta, it’s all so vidid. I think I’m becoming delirious.

  20. Kelci Brook says:

I love Taylor Swift so her doing a soundtrack for The Hunger Games is just so awsome! I love this song! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

  21. Hunger Games Crazy says:

This is the perfect combination for my friends. ;) They obsess over Taylor and Deeply love the hunger games. :) <3 Amazing song!♥ Wanna go download it now! :D

  22. Hunger Games Crazy says:

    ♥♥♥♥:) ♥♥♥♥ :) ♥♥♥♥:)
“You have a remarkable memory.”♥ I think this is mostly Peeta. Bit of Katniss…
    ♥♦♣♠ ;) ♥♦♣♠ ;) ♥♦♣♠
OH! THIS CAN TOTALLY BE FOR THE END! It is so beautiful! Haunting yet simply amazing! It sounds like thunder in the backgorund :) Or the cave! :D
    ☺☻ :D ☺☻ :D ☺☻ :D

STOP TAUNTING US!!!! JUST COME ON MARCH ♪♫☼♪♫☼♪♫☼♪♫☼

NOW I AM GOING TO CRY

  23. Emiford12 says:

I LOVED this song! I have always been a massive Taylor Swift fan and I was super excited to find out she was on the soundtrack! I seriously think that this song will be played after Katniss sings to Rue after she is fatally wounded! While I listened to the song that is the only part in the book that really came to mind! I think that it would be perfect at the part in the film! Listening to this song has made me so much more excited for the movie even though I thought it was impossible to be more excited then i was!!

  24. Sarah says:

    Rue’s Death! I think it’s obvious!

  25. thg lover says:

i think it might be when there saying there good byes or when there in the cave but i never realy listen to taylor swift either but this is one of the best ive heard

  26. thg lover says:

or maybe when katniss and gale are in the medow talking to run away with each other but katniss says no she cant leave her sister prim

  27. hunger games fan! says:

I love this song! i think it would be good after rue dies. That is if they arent going to play the song they sing in the book. they are similar to eachother. Maybe they could play it after katniss walks away from rue

  28. RebeccaB. says:

I think it’s either when Rue is dead (or dying) or when Peeta and Katniss are in the cave.

  29. Jasmine says:

Once I heard that Taylor Swift was singing this song I died. I love Taylor Swift and knowing that she is going to be on the soundtrack of my favorite book turned to movie adaptation makes me only happier. Can’t wait to see what scene this song is going to be in, but I’m so excited for March 23.

  30. Anita says:

omg this song is perfect for Peeta and Katniss, although i think it would fit better at the end of mockingjay……
but i think they will play at the end of the movie when Peeta finds out that everything was for the cameras

  31. Jabber jays says:

ok so i heard this at a sleepover and wouldnt stop playing this song and i was crying ahhh its so beautiful i like when she says darling everythings on fire ahhhhh its just so perfect. i wanted muse to sing for them but this is better

  32. katnissnpeeta says:

oh my gosh…. did anyone think about this being played during rue’s death????

  33. Sara says:

    OMG So excited!!!!
I think this song would be played in the Cave Scene where she’s taking care of Peeta after finding him camouflauging on the ground. When she goes to get the medicine for his leg at the feast and then comes back to give it to him. Or it could be when Katniss and Peeta finally finish the games and it’s the end when they go their separate ways. It’s definitely a Katniss and Peeta song though!!!! Love itt :) :) <3

  34. Katniss says:

This song is truely BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i Cant wait to hear it in the movie!
Now two of my favourite things are in my favourite book adaptation; Taylor Swift and Josh Hutcherson!!!

I can see this song being used in a CAVE SCENE or when Katniss is being fixed in THE HOVERCRAFT after the games because it keeps saying how their SAFE!!!

    I LOVE IT!!!!

  35. Julez says:

this song is absolutely gorgeous. It give Taylor’s voice so much justice. She should really sing songs like this more often.
As for it being in the Hunger Games. i SCREAMED at the top of my lungs when i got her Twitter update.

  36. Love of Peeta says:

This is absolutely beautiful. I have never really listened to a Taylor Swift song but wow just wow. I agree with Alley this would be an excellent song for the end credits. Like right after she says the boy with the bread is already slipping away. Right after that. And there are a lot of people saying Taylor’s song is too delicate but it is perfect the song stays with you. To me this song represents the whole of the Hunger Games. I especially like the lyrics:Just close your eyes….You’ll be alright Come morning light You and I will be safe and sound. It kind of reminds me of Rue’s lullaby.

  37. Zelda says:

    @Tyler and myhungergames-

I think you guys are both right-this song is directed at Peeta! It’s beautiful and oh-so-sad!

  38. Zelda says:

I just had a good reason about why it is addressed to Peeta- the part where the song says “the shadows almost killed your light”, which could be referring to when Peeta’s mind was hijacked and he was trained to kill Katniss. His earlier kindness was unrecognizable through the memories that were turned to shadows.

  39. Kristin and Danielle says:

wonderful song and we think this song will be played either on the katniss and peeta cave scene or right after rues death

  40. Jessica H. says:

This is an awesome song. A lot of people are saying to use this for rues death scene, but that part has a song of it’s own already. I was actually thinking this will be the perfect song for the end of the movie. To close the movie off. If u remember at the end of the book there’s troubles arising and the last line oh the book is “I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.” I truly believe that is the perfect moment to put this song.

  41. Jabber jays says:

i dont want this to be for rue, it seems to obvious

  42. Jabber jays says:

Just had a thought this could be playing during the berrie scene

  43. #1 Team Peeta :) :) says:

well yeah this was a huge surprise but when i listened to the song i totally saw how this song fit in…& idk i think as she does tht lil ritual for Rue in the arena? idk but for me, the song really fits into that moment

  44. Molly says:

I think this song will be played when katniss is sitting with rue after she dies because in the chorus it says close your eyes, no one can hurt you now, because she was forced against her will to participate in the hunger games and she died because of it

  45. THGirl says:

When they announce only one winner can win and Katniss gets straight up and points her bow and arrow at Peeta; Peeta throws his knife in the pool (Katniss describes this moment being like slow motion), so i think the song would fit if they effect it like that in the movie it would go really well. and when (SPOILER ALERT – just in case) they’re (fake) suicidal with the berries.

THIS PART WILL BE EPIC IN THE MOVIE IF THEY KEPT IT LIKE IT WAS IN THE BOOK!

    Love THGirl <3

  46. Mara Wheat says:

this song is so beautiful. it is perfect for peeta

  47. HungerGamesTribute says:

This Song Made me cry, its so sad….
I think they play the song when rue dies, the series is sooo heart wrenching sooo many people die…

  48. HungerGamesTribute says:

The Song is Beautiful, but soooo sad

  49. gamilah isa says:

This song is cool ….it goes with the movie …I mainly like the tone of the song…its perfect for this type of movie.

  50. thg lover says:

thgirl i agree the movie would be epic if they keep the berrie scene like they did in the book

  51. Mrs. Mellark says:

When I told my friends she was on the soundtrack, they were all kinda bummed out. But after hearing this song, NONE OF THEM COULD BE HAPPIER!

  52. Cinna-mon says:

i am only 12 years old but i am a full on hunger games obsessed fan. i have been i taylor swift fan for a while but when i heard she was going to be on the soundtrack i was furious. after hearing the song i have changed my mind. i know most people are guessing where it will be in the movie but i dont want to because i want to be surprised. cant wait until march 23! i am forcing my older sister to take me with her see it! happy holidays and HAPPY HUNGER GAMES!!!!!!

  53. (Shh! It's a secret!) says:

This could be played in two possible places–As Katniss decorates Rue in flowers and walks away, vowing to win the Games in her honor, or basically anytime in the Caves.
I think that the second is more likely, seeing as Rue’s scene (as I have artfully dubbed it) already has it’s own song.

Though, honestly, I did not see this coming. I’m a big Swift fan, and, before hearing the song, was both excited and horrified that she’s on the soundtrack.

After hearing it, however, I’m convinced. I’ve downloaded it, and may or may not make a video to it!

  54. Wesley Cheney says:

I don’t LOVE Taylor Swift,But I don’t hate her either. I do LOVE this song, though. I think it would be good anytime in the cave scene or in the end credits. I think it would work really good if it played while Katniss and Peeta were on the cornicopia while the mutts almost kill Cato. They don’t,however, normally play music with lyrics during intense scenes like that. I would like any of those three. But I’m sure it will be good no matter where they include it.

  55. Maddie says:

I really think that this shouldnt be played after rue dies because it would take away the effect of the lullaby. I think that this should be played when shes in the cave with PEETA<3
