Naya Rivera would b great. She plays mean on Glee. I never would’ve thought of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She actually looks like the drawing up to. If they choose an “unknown” she could work. I mean the main 3 of HG were only known for a couple movies each b4 HG shot.
Which all the more reason that Natalie Dormer from the Tudors which is actually known for is perfect for Johana Mason. Since you guys like Naya Rivera from Glee does not mean she is right for the part. I voted for Natalie Dormer I seen her work on Tudors so I suggest you guys do the same

Even though I like Naya Rivers, she’s not how i pictured Johanna to look. It doesnt give much information in the books on her looks but I imagine someone more like Kristen Bell.
Naya Rivers does play a mean person on glee but then I will only see Santana from glee not Johanna. Them being so similar is why I DONT think it would work :/ Which is why I think Kristen Bell would be a GREAT Johanna

I know most people dont know Troian but she’s off Pretty Little Liars and she would be great at it! I think she’d do a perfect job. Since i’m talking about PLL anyway, Lucy Hale would do a good job too, she’s a great actor.

Honestly I have no clue what actress I think should play Johanna. I didn’t picture any actress and had my own picture of what Johanna sounded like and looked like and none of these actresses above really stand out to me as Johanna. They will pick the perfect Johanna either way, they did with every single character in The Hunger Games.

She’s not my first choice but I think she can pull it off. Johanna has been described as either gutsy or crazy because in a movie she starred in; Burlesque, there was a point there where her character lost it and went crazy and gutsy and I can definitely see that for her.

It’s annoyingly hard to find any videos on youtube that don’t come with a song attached when it comes to ‘character studies’. Anyways, the first is really short and shows Kristen’s character as a psycho electro who basically has a meltdown and spends the majority of the episode torturing the show’s main villain. It showcases (at least to me) that Kristen can pull off the viciousness and anger needed for Johanna. But again it’s really short so if you want to know more the character’s name is Elle Bishop.
The 2nd video is about both Elle and Veronica Mars, another badass character that Kristen plays. This shows off more of the sadistic sociopathic part of Elle’s character who can kill without any remorse. As for the Veronica Mars part it shows that Kristen can pull of vulnerability. Johanna isn’t just some one-not bitch. She has depth.
I wouldn’t say these videos are the BEST representation of Kristen’s amazing acting in those roles but it was the best I could find on a moment’s notice and can hopefully shed some light on why some of us want her for the role. Kristen Bell CAN be Johanna.

Because Kristen can actually act. She’s played characters before that are very similar to Johanna Mason so she’s got the credentials. ‘Veronica Mars’ was a ballsy girl with plenty of fight in her. ‘Elle Bishop’ was a sadistic sociopath who would kill without remorse. And besides, Johanna won her games by pretending to be meek. To be able to pull that off one would have to look petite and timid. Kristen Bell is just perfect for the role. Not to mention she’s a huge fan of the series.
me too Phoebe Tonkin is the closest to Johanna I think. She already has that bad girl act thing down, from playing on the Secret Circle and all. Everytime I see her I think Johanna. Kristen Bell is too old for her. Even though she says she wants to play her that dosen’t mean she will be good. Johanna should be young, and brave. Not a 30 year old! She should have long black hair. I think over all Phoebe is the best choice. Like I dont think that they should go for a huge huge star, and she has the bad girl down based on the Secret Circle, yet she can also do vulnerable too, she is someone I can see being physically tough and kicking ass. I mean more so than compared to other actresses.
Like I love Mila but I cant stop seeing Jackie the ditz from That 70s Show. Plus shes a little too small and doesnt look tough enough in my opinion. Im also a huge Gleek and I love Naya and she would be a good Johanna and can definitely pull off the mean girl, but its more high school teenage mean as opposed to someone whose lived a traumatic life and has been scarred and jaded by her life. Like she doesnt seem necessarily “strong” to me. Like she doesnt scream survivor. (especially with the dodgeball scene in Glee)This analysis is based on her portrayal of Santana by the way.
Also for me and most other people if certain actresses are so well known for certain roles (like Natalie Portman in Black Swan, or even Mila Kunis) Its hard to see them out of those roles. Which is why I love unknowns so much with stuff like this.

Why do you think she doesn’t fit? Out of all the candidates above, she would be my top choice. She was amazing in Firefly and Terminator (TV series). I could see her being able to pull off the weak and innocent act that Johanna did and then turn it off to viciously kill everyone. Just my opinion of course, but she’s worth considering.
What about Lauren Cohan, she played Bella in the Supernatural series and currently plays Maggie at The Walking Dead. I think she would be a great Johanna Mason!!
I had serious never thought of her but she would! She fits Johanna’s description with the short sort of spiky hair that she has and she has such a range in acting and she looks like a badass, which is how I ultimately picture Johanna.

I don’t really want Kristen Bell to play her. I don’t think it would turn out very good. And that’s nothing like I pictured Johanna. I pictured her with dark skin for some reason. So the only person on the list that I would be 100% for would be Zoe Saldana. I think she has the acting ability to do it and that’s how I pictured Johanna. I’m probably the only one that feels that way but that’s what I think.
But honestly, I don’t care who plays her as long as they can act and sell Johannas attitude.

Rooney Mara. Johanna needs to be athletic and strong enough to swing an axe.(she’s from D7/Lumber) Rooney has that odd beauty is very slender yet strong, and has shown she can be ‘mean and strong’ yet nice as well in Girl w/ Dragon Tattoo. She is also a great actress and an up and coming star. Johanna is a big role in the next 2 books. she could handle it. I’d say Eliza Dushku or Summer Glau, but at 30+, they both seem too old now.

Phoebe’s a good choice. She’s got the whole badass thing going for her and she’s amazing. I can’t see Naya as Johanna because Johanna isn’t just a mean girl and to me that’s all Naya is, there would be no deeper substance and there is more to Johanna than just being bitchy.

Well I was stating my own personal opinion. I’ve never had the inclination to watch Glee because personally I don’t like the show. Since everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I really don’t see why me seeing Glee would change my point of view. I’m not saying anything bad about Naya. She might be a fine actress for all I know, but personally I don’t see her as Johanna.

I doubt they’re going to pick anyone that everyone knows about. There were a lot of names in The Hunger Games movie that weren’t very well known. After seeing all the fan art and more descriptions (esp’ly that Joanna is only around 22 or 23) Phoebe Tonkin is the perfect choice. Right age, right looks, she can seem ‘weak and helpless’, then become a mighty be-ooch. They’d have to bulk up her muscles a lot though.

I really think Mila Kunis should play Johanna. She has that tough look and the way she can deliver sarcastic/bitchy lines is great! She has a defensive tough expression that can really portray she has ” no one left to love”, yet blocks it out to do what needs to be done. When I was reading the book I was picturing her the WHOLE time. She is so talented and well fits the criteria of an attractive young woman

I honestly think that Nina Dobrev should play Johanna Mason. From her portrayal of Catherine on the Vampire Diaries, I think it can be said that she can bring the attitude that Johanna has coupled with the soft side that the character has, through her portrayal of Elena. Well said. There were people who were black and people who were white in the book, and Johanna was a white girl. They got relatively new people for the Hunger Games and they all did a fantastic job. And people definitely need to leave their glee actors out of this.
Actually many of the people in the books never were given a skin color. Like Johanna she is simply described as having spiky hair and wide set brown eyes. Now because she had these characteristics everyone gave her white skin but truly it was never said. Any one of those girls could be given that look. This is where assumptions get us. And one of the big assumptions was that Cinna would be white. Now everyone would say well it did say he has green eyes and not many black people have those. Yes it does but does it ever state his skin color. No. And because it doesn’t this gave the movie makers the chance to diversify and give Lenny Kravitz another chance at acting. I for one enjoy the diversity that was displayed in the movie. And I also think people should open their minds to options other than what they saw in their heads. There are so many talented actors that really need a chance and others who want to break out of one particular set. Like Naya,for you to say basically all she is is one of those Glee actors is you not even giving her a chance. I think Naya could because of the complexity, she has the ability to create an incredibly complex character with very little script, and Johanna doesn’t have a huge part in either book (less time in terms of screentime in a movie) so she’d need to be able to create a lot with little. Naya could do that and if they do makeup and such right as well as cutting her hair she can do the innocent/weak aspect, she can play vulnerability well.

I think it should be Michelle Rodriguez. She has that tough side, but most likely can nail that teensy bit of a soft side. I loved her in Avatar.

Helena Bonham Carter should certainly play Johanna Mason! She is an amazing actress! She was eccentric and evil for Bellatrix in Harry Potter! Although, she can be an Oscar-nominated actress for the King’s Speech as the Queen. In Alice in Wonderland she played the Queen of Hearts brilliantly. I AM SHOCKED THAT THEY DON’T HAVE HER AS A CHOICE!!! Also, Emma Thompson should play Wiress because she is perfect for it.
Helena looks too old- don’t get me wrong, she’s incredible but I’d never believe she won a few years back, she looks much older than a teen, and far older than Jennifer Lawrence, not within her years. Maybe Enobaria? She’d be great as her I think or as Coin

Because she could pull it off so well; People didn’t suggest her just b/c she’s from Glee, fans suggested her because she’s an incredible actress who has done amazing things with very little written script, she’s created a complex character from minimal and Johanna doesn’t have too much of a part in either book though she has some so whoever plays her has to really give a lot with very little. Naya would be great. The point isn’t mysterious actors…. Jennifer Lawrence is hardly mysterious, she was nominated for an Oscar last year and was in X Men, Liam Hemsworth isn’t mysterious, he’s pretty well known.Only actors who played tributes are not well known.
I think Jen and Liam though weren’t very famous before. Yes they’d been in other movies and Jen is an Oscar nominee but they weren’t too well known. Before Hunger Games most people probably just knew Liam as Miley’s boyfriend. I used to hate the idea of Naya playing Johanna because I hate Glee, but I saw her outside of Glee and she seems like a cool person. Also it’s not about picking mysterious actors it’s about picking talented actors. Any actress who has the talent to be Johanna should get as fair a chance as any to be considered for the role. If Naya’s being considered, then she must have some talent for people to think she has a shot at it.
I think that’s why she’s being considered because people see her as the role; I love Glee but I don’t see her as just ‘Santana’ , I see her as Naya so I think she could play Johanna and not have an issue with seeming like her other character. I think she’s incredibly talented and would nail the role. She’s sort of famous via Glee but not really that much more than either of those two were.

I would say either Naya or Mila. They can both rock the vicious killing girl, but also disguise their real personality acting like the cute helpless girl.
Naya, in her Glee role, shows her fighting side and her self defense each time they judge her. But she can also act during critical moments, showing off her vulnerable side.
Mila, in that 70′s show, is the stupid cheerleader who actually knows a lot. She is fierce and loud, ready to attack at any moment and says whatever she’s thinking when the situation gets intense. But she is also a sentimental girl.
All of these characteristics would perfectly fit in what is the persona of Johanna Mason.
I think either girl would be just perfect.

Totally agree with you. Nothing against Naya but I think it’d be best not to have someone whom a lot of people see in a particular role. Troian is a wonderful actress. I’ve seen her on Pretty Little Liars and NCIS and I would love to see her as Johanna. Or Phoebe Tonkin is another good choice. Phoebe is very talented and has the right spark to pull it off.

For me it’s definately Eliza Dushku. She is one of the most versatile actresses around. She plays a total bad-ass (vampire slayer Faith) in Buffy. Her work in the series Tru Calling was excellent. Her acting in Dollhouse was amazing, as she proves she can play any role that they throw at her. Even though she’s a bit older, she still looks young enough for Johanna. She certainly gets my vote.
Guys listen up Since Naya Rivera is on Glee does not make her right for the part of Johana Mason in Hunger Games series. Looking at some of the comments on here I agree that Kirsten Bell from Veronica Mars and Heroes is a good choice. I think Natalie Dormer and Kirsten Bell is a good choice and they should be consider

I think Phoebe Tonkin should play the part of Johanna in the Catching Fire movie because she has played in a show called “The Secret Cirle” playing the part of Faye, who was a girl that was kind of mean pretty much all of the time. In the Catching Fire movie, Johanna is kind of mean too, so that is why I think that she would be a good pick.
I love Naya Rivera, and I am a HUGE Gleek, but as an even bigger Hunger Games fan (sorry Glee), I have to say I don’t really think Naya would be a such a great Johanna. Not just because I would expect her to burst out in song during fights or walk into a room wearing a Cheerios uniform, but because I don’t think she can pull off Johanna. Santana is a tough-but-vulnerable cheerleader, but Johanna is a tough-but-vulnerable-and-slightly-psychotic killer chick. There’s a pretty big transition there.
