The Carolina Chocolate Drops on Writing “Daughters Lament”
The Carolina Chocolate Drops spoke with NJ.com about what is was like to write “Daughters Lament” for The Hunger Games soundtrack “Songs from District 12 and Beyond.”
When Rhiannon Giddens was asked to write a song for the “Hunger Games” movie, she dived head first into the books to understand what all the fuss was about. Giddens downloaded the Trilogy and read them in “like, three days.”
“I was so inspired by them,” she said.
And in that inspiration she chose to give new life to an old song Hazel Dickens’ “Pretty Bird.”
“I took that song and I rewrote it and rewrote the tune a little bit. What struck me was her (the main character Katniss Everdeen) father’s mining accident and her background,” she said. “And that’s what I wrote about in the song.”
