On Casting Peeta and Gale – The Hunger Games Movie
The big news yesterday was the confirmation of Josh Hutcherson in the role of Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale in the upcoming The Hunger Games movie. But while many fans voiced their disappointment at the announcement, those behind the scenes say they are sure they have made the right choice.
In a statement from Lionsgate, director Gary Ross had this to say about the role of Peeta:
“When I read the book, I thought Peeta would be the hardest role to cast, and I feel so lucky that we found someone who embodies every aspect of such a complex character. I can’t wait to work with Josh.”
The Hunger Games author, Suzanne Collins also believes Josh will be pefect in the role.
“I was fortunate enough to be in the room with Gary Ross when Josh came in to audition. Three lines into the read I knew he’d be fantastic. Josh totally captured Peeta’s temperament, his sense of humor and his facility for language. I’m thrilled to have him aboard.”
And as for Liam Hemsworth taking on the challenge of Gale, well The Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson says he’s the perfect actor to capture the character.
“Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was on the actor we cast to capture him by showing, not telling. This was accomplished so beautifully in Suzanne’s writing, and Liam was able to translate it so naturally to the screen. At the same time, Gale’s journey across the three books transforms him, and Liam’s performance left no doubt that he would take us there. ”
Of course the real test will be when we get to finally see the movie. I am more than happy to reserve my judgement and put a bit of faith in the filmmakers that they will do all they can to translate The Hunger Games into an amazing movie.

If Suzanne thinks he’s fantastic, then I am totally for Josh. She’s the creator, so she knows what will work.

if suzanne is for josh then thats great..i imagined sum1else but suzanne knows what shes doing..duh.. you know i dont really like any of joshs movies that much(so far(sum are pretty good) but this could really be it…liam as gale if you get the hair then a little makeup,etc. hes good..now i really hope they don’t take this long to cast the rest..the movie’s release date will pushed down if so..anyways my point if your a FAN then please just be excited for the actors..we’ll wait for the movie to judge them ok?we all agree now?please i just don’t want any downers

If they both (Gary Ross and Suzzane Collins) both agree that they will be fit for the roles, then I will support and watch the movie as I had planned to.
All the support, best wishes and hopeful thinking won’t make a project special. They have put a lot of thought and effort into the casting but where is the magic? I just don’t feel it yet. Honestly, do you want to kiss Josh.. do you want to stare into his eyes all night long.. do you miss him so much you want to scream? I wish I did

it dosent matter what person plays what as long as they can ACT… because in reality everybody has a diffrent picture of gale and peeta in there heads, so you can whine all you want but its not your choice. Suzanne Collins wrote the book and she choose them and iam happy with it.
ughghhh stil so mad about josh for peeta but i guess that im with myhungergamesfan that we should wait until the movie to judge them, if suzanna agreed then he’s gota have some peeta in him. lets just pleeze judge until the movie comes out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a bit relieved when I saw that Suzanne had confidence in Josh. But he remains the worst option for me.
He may have “the spirit, the same way of speaking that Peeta has ” and stuff like to get the hang of the character. But I think there are much better options for Peeta. I may be wrong, but that’s what I think.
Well, Liam as Gale will be very difficult to accept. I look at him and I see a surfer.
I know that each one has a way of imagining the characters, but we have to admit that almost no one imagined the cast that way.
Sure, let’s give them a chance. But the chance will probably be our movie, then good luck to them. I hope they surprise me positively and shut my mouth. I just want this movie to be perfect.
I’m actually surprised on how happy I am on these choices. The whole process on this movie has been really fan based and they are taking every precaution to make sure that we love it. Because of that, I trust them in every decision they make. I’m still a little iffie on Jennifer, but I totally trust them. They wouldn’t choose these actors if they weren’t the best for the story.

When I first saw who Josh Hutcherson is I thought NO WAY can that be Peeta, but I decided to find some recent videos of him and I will have to say he is PERFECT for the part; just missign the blue eyes and blonde hair, but hollywood is good at decieving the eyes. I don’t think they could have found a better actor for the part. I am so excited that they are making this story into a movie. I just hope they do all the book and not just the first one.

oh also heres some info for some fans who got worried about the artemis thing: artemis the working title(wt) for the hunger games.. which means thats what they use when filming to keep it under radar.. examples include:(iron man2=rasutin(wt), Inception=hourglass(wt)..i know most of you figured it out probz. but just wanted to clarify that..it will definitely be called The Hunger Games

I don’t know.. I look at Josh and I think Gale. I look at Liam and I think ‘buff surfer guy’. Seriously, I imagined Josh as Gale…. just because he seemed like the guy. This movie was set on the wrong foot with Jennifer as Katniss, she’s 21, and not 16 like she should be. This movie, yet again, is going to ruin my liking of the book, as Percy Jackson (movie) ruined the book series for me.
But then again, that’s just my opinion. But I don’t know if this movie can be as good as I hoped.
