Halloween - The Hunger Games

Halloween is just around the corner.  For fans of The Hunger Games, it’s a chance to dress up as your favorite character. We thought we’d put together our tips on how to achieve your look thanks to Audrey who has done some amazing dress ups in the past without breaking the bank.

Keep in mind, the key to having a good costume isn’t necessarily exactness in hair, eye, or skin color, length of hair, body shape, or any of those characteristics that make you who you are. It’s the details of the actual costume. These are minimum details for these characters. You can always do more but if you have these, most people will know who you are without asking if they’re familiar with the story.

Katniss - halloween costume - Katniss in the arena

Katniss Everdeen:

Katniss Holloween - Reaping day dress- The Hunger Games

Probably the character most people will go for. Her most recognized outfit is in the arena – olive pants, black shirt, black leather jacket with boots and hair braided down the back. To accessorize: bow and arrow, orange backpack covered in mud and of course a Mockingjay pin. All of these aren’t necessary, but the more you have, the more complete the outfit will be.

The other looks for Katniss include her Training outfit for in the Capitol, black pants and District 12 top, as well as her cuffed short sleeved light blue colored dress that she wore on Reaping day.

If you’re not sure how to do the braid, check out the video below.

Peeta Mellark:

In the arena, Peeta also wore a black short sleeve t-shirt with olive or dark pants and boots (much like you would do for Katniss). You could also do the Capitol Training look and grab a District 12 top.  If you wanted to have some fun with makeup, you could paint camouflage on your arm to look like a tree.

You could go as the Boy with the Bread: Dark pants dingy white short sleeve t shirt with a white butcher apron and a loaf of French bread. (burned on one side for more detail) For makeup – use flour. He’s covered in it!  At the reaping, Peeta wore a white button up shirt with his sleeves rolled up and his hair slicked back  - look nice! You’re going to the Capitol.

Gale Hawthorne:

Dark blue pants and light denim long sleeved buttoned shirt during the Reaping.  For the rest of the time he wore khaki pants with a light colored top which he’d put a hunting vest over when out in the woods. Probably will be most recognized if paired with Katniss.

Effie Trinket (or any capitol citizen):

The Hunger Games Halloween - Capitol People

This would be the most fun in my opinion! Think 80′s as a good start for Effie. Pick one color that is bright and use as many different shades of that same color as possible throughout the outfit. Poofy skirt or dress with leggings and crazy high shoes (for girls). Add a big (if not huge) flower (or feathers) of the same color in your hair and pale the skin with very pursed lips drawn on. Fake eyelashes are fun too – make them as crazy as you can find them. There are no limits in the capitol!

If that’s too costly for you, just keep it simple. Big hair, crazy makeup – bright colors. For men, Find a really bright colored suit and wear an even louder shirt with it. Hair color is probably big for this one… especially Caesar. But you can find lots of temporary colors that will wash out the next day.

Caesar Flickerman:

You need a very shimmering bright blue suit with blue hair in a puffed front ponytail. And big white white white teeth!!!

Haymitch Abernathy:

You can do a white or cream pant and vest that look disheveled with a tie that is totally loosened around the neck, long hair that is not neatly kept and an empty liquor bottle (don’t want to get arrested unnecessarily!!!)

Seneca Crane:

The key thing with Seneca is the beard. If you have that, you’re pretty set. Other than that he wears khaki colored slacks. Red dress shirt with a black vest  and a black sport coat. His vest is an angled high buttoned vest with a red turned out edge. If you’re wanting that same look you could use a sash, if a turned out edge is a little beyond your costuming abilities.

  2. Aaron says:

My friend was making a Katniss hunting outfit, or the first one you see her in the movie. She wasn’t going for 100% exactness, but she did call me asking for help. Since I do leather working, and it was for her Birthday, I made her an archer’s glove from scratch, very similar to what Katniss wears in those first few scenes. She says I should start selling them since it was so awesome.

  3. Foxface says:

Can you please put ideas for a foxface costume? She rocks, and I can’t find a costume for her on any website I have visited.
