The Search for a Mockingjay Director
We’re still yet to find out exactly who will be in Catching Fire and the shooting schedule set down for later in the year, but it seems Lionsgate producers are on the look out for the best director – or directors – to take on the Mockingjay movies.
IndieWire is reporting that Lionsgate, along with author Suzanne Collins and producer Nina Jacobsen are vetting potential candidates.
New Lionsgate movie chiefs, Summit’s Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, producers Nina Jacobson and author Suzanne Collins are currently vetting the right directors for the last two “Mockingjay” films, which are also hurtling into production (for release November 2014 and 2015), too fast for Francis Lawrence to be in charge. The second “Twilight” could have been a better movie had it not been so rushed, but Summit got away with it and laughed all the way to the bank. So they are following the same playbook.
The first of the Mockingjay movies will come out just one year after Catching Fire, making it a tight schedule for Francis Lawrence to be involved. It’s still anyone’s guess if the Mockingjay movies will be filmed at the same time with the same director, or separately, with different people in charge.

HMMMM. Don’t like the sound of this…at all!

WE WANT QUALITY!
I KNOW LIKE WTF!!!
DO THEY THINK THEY CAN RUSH THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIES AND GET AWAY WITH IT!!!!!!! THINK AGAIN BITCHES!!!
THE FANS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE EXPECTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So soon? Catching Fire doesn’t even have its first poster yet—teaser or official. Can’t there just be one Mockingjay movie? Isn’t it cliche enough every popular YA book series is becoming a film franchise without the split finale? Lionsgate, please be loyal to the fandom and not loyal to the money profit from the fandom. Yes, you want these movies to be a success—yes, we want the same thing, but originality for how you’re ending the series would be the best way to go. I seriously hope Mockingjay will turn into one movie. Another movie doesn’t exactly mean all the details will be in—but they had better include Prim’s death and the violence for whatever ending they decide on—it’s what makes Mockingjay the realest, grittiest, most violent book in the trilogy.
I don’t see the problem with the split. Two movies means more stuff to fit (Mockingjay is more condensed and concise, it has a lot more stuff happening). A single movie for Mockingjay would mean too much to cover in so little time.
Plus, you’re going to get more about The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence and everyone! Why complain about it? More Hunger Games is better, isn’t it?
Not splitting just to be original isn’t affordable for the sake of the story.
Yes, but that also means the longer wait. ): Well, I guess the wait would be worth it, wouldn’t it?
Wtf?!
Not surprised at all. I completely expected this. If they get the Mockingjay director soon then that person can be working on all the preproduction stuff before Caching Fire is in the can.
Gotta agree. With the schedule they have laid out, they have to get cracking on this post-haste! Ross would not do CF because he didn’t have the time he wanted to do it right. If other directors have any chance of doing a quality job, they need to start NOW for MockingJay.
When i heard Francis Lawrence was directing Catching Fire i thought Gary should come back and direct Mockingjay since he directed the 1st one like David Yates directed the first and last in the Harry Potter series.
Actually, it was Chris Columbus who directed the first of the Harry Potter, and the second Harry Potter. David Yates only directed the 5th Harry Potter to the last Harry Potter.
I see no reason why they need to rush Mockingjay to the point where it has to come out a year after Catching Fire. Are there more contract issues or are they just loving the money that much? I’m disappointed how they are handling the rest of this trilogy.
I think the issue is around the folks playing the roles are growing up. It will be harder to make both leads look 17 when they will have actually aged 4 years in real life. Jennifer could end up pregnant, Josh is already looking older than 17. They have to rush because their leads are 21 and 19 when the first was done. 22 and 20 now. 21 and 23 for the next filming. 22 and 24 for the final.
Takes more make-up, more dieting, more prep time.
Gary Ross, please come back!
Gary Ross, as amazing of a movie he made, loves the “shaky cam” effect and during those Mockingjay action scenes, we don’t want people throwing their lunch up during the movie. No!
As much as I would love to be proven wrong, I can’t see GR coming back. If CF was being produced too quickly for his liking, how could he manage two MJ films coming out in consecutive years?
They are talking about two directors for MockingJay. He could do the last one, and be the consistent thread that ties it into a neat bow.
i reckon francis lawrence AND gary ross should do mockingjay. THEY BETTER NOT RUSH IT THOUGH I WANT AN EPIC MOVIE!!!!
