VIDEO: Garrett Hedlund on why he Passed on being Finnick in ‘Catching Fire’
Prior to Sam Claflin being cast as the District 4 stud Finnick Odair in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘, there were quite a few actors rumored to be in the running for the role. One of those actors was Garrett Hedlund, who was at the Toronto International Film Festival, along with Jennifer Lawrence and Woody Harrelson, promoting his new film ‘On The Road’.
While there MTV caught up with Garrett, and in an interview the actor confirms that Lionsgate approached him about the role of Finnick in the new movie. Find out why he turned it down in the interview above!
“They did [approach me],” Hedlund admitted to MTV about almost playing Finnick in the upcoming “Hunger Games” sequel. “But I was working on this film at the time. We shot the whole film in 23 days and I was really immersed in it. I couldn’t get around [to reading the 'Hunger Games' novels].”
“Everybody around me is flipping out about the books, and I didn’t really have the time to sit down lately to read any book, not just ‘Hunger Games,’” he explained further. “But I’ve got a couple [projects] on my plate that I’m looking forward to reading now.”

He would have had to wear contacts anyway. His eyes are blue.
And SEE!!! He didn’t even want this role. If he had, he would have made an effort for it.
Exactly. If I were an actress and I wanted some role, I’d kill for it.
No murders, please. Just everything within your power to get the role you want…including a no brainer like reading a book and auditioning for a role.
Damn you, Garrett. The fandom will explode now.
The perfect guy to play Finnick, is the reason that Catching Fire won’t have the perfect guy to play Finnick. WHY GARRETT WHY?!!??!?
I think we all now see his attitude is NOT the right attitude for the role of Finnick…even if you WERE a fan before.
Glad someone got hold of this and posted it for all to see!
Garrett Hedlund isn’t even hot.
Agreed. Everything about his face is a little weird to me.
damnit garrett…. you let me down lol
I agree with KJ… the way the quote is phrased, makes it seem like he wasn’t interested in the role (unlike Jena Malone, for example, who was a fan of the books in the first place).
He’s my forever Finnick. I’m actually happy to hear that Lionsgate really did offer him the role. That means they hear us! I’m a bit sad though he did not get the role. But, don’t blame him. He was busy working on ‘On the Road’ and had sign a ‘Lullaby’ contract. Maybe, the time is not working. I wonder if he was negotiating the schedule, but, Lionsgate already had fixed schedule for ‘Catching Fire’ to shoot and can’t set it back. We all know Lionsgate and Fox had schedule clash for ‘Catching Fire’ and Jennifer Lawrence’s ‘X-Men First Class’ sequel. Oh, I just wish the timing was right. *sobbing*
And after I hear this news, now I can accept Sam for the movie, although Garrett will always be my Finnick.
