POLL: Who Should Direct Catching Fire?

| April 6, 2012 | 22 Comments More

With the news breaking today that Gary Ross may not, in fact, return for Catching Fire (Lionsgate has released a statement saying that his leaving the franchise is not yet confirmed, despite reports otherwise), that may leave the director’s chair wide open for a film all but guaranteed to do even better than the massively successful Hunger Games.

The question, of course, is who might that position go to?  I’ve put together an initial list of possible choices, with a focus on those who have had experience with dystopian films.

What do you think?  Is there someone who you think fits better than any of these?

  1. garretto says:

Cauron (Harry Potter 3 was the best), Ridley Scott (some of my most favortite movies including Black Hawk Down/aka MockingJay), Whedon.

  2. greg says:

Alfonso Cuaron Please! he is capable of making it both visually and emotionally pleasing :)

  3. Cardea says:

James McTeigue!! V for Vendetta was amazing and he would do so well with Catching Fire! Katniss is as reluctant as Natalie Portman’s character was in the beginning and I loved the way the Director crafted that movie!

  4. Maggie H. says:

    GARY ROSS. That is all.

  5. Elle says:

Gary Ross is for sure not doing it. I just saw something on IMDB. That makes me sad, because no, THG wasn’t perfect, but it was obvious that he really cared about the books and the story, and I think that with Catching Fire the only direction he would have gone in would have been up.

So now I say Joss Whedon. Seriously! I may be aging myself a lot here, but I grew up with “Buffy” and there just has never been a better work of science fiction on televison, ever. It was one of the greatest TV shows of all time. That’s what originally drew me to Katniss in the first place. At first I thougt, jeez, I am way too old for these books. But I fell in love with Katniss as a strong yet sensitive heroine, just like Buffy was. Whedon 2012!! (or 2013?) Come on!

  6. Judy says:

Alfonso Cuaron’s films are too dark; I don’t mean the story, he takes all of the color and light out of it. If he does it, it’ll probably rain in the jungle the whole time!

  7. Rachael says:

    gary ross

  8. jrbear says:

How about none of the above? I’d be afraid any of them would want to put ‘their creative stamp’ on the movie and change it too much from the book.
Maybe Rupert Wyatt, since he did a good job on Planet of the Apes, and his effects were very believable, and he’s young enough to understand the romance parts.

    • jrbear says:

realistically, they will have to narrow the field to who is actually available on this short a notice, (they have to start filming this fall) and is willing to work for the same or less that Ross did. I’m thinking it could be a younger director w/out a big resume, who maybe hasn’t had the ‘big budget blockbuster’ experience before? It could go terribly wrong.

    • D&JC says:

We agree with your comment on Rupert but still like the idea of Chris and Paul Weitz

  9. Jake says:

That actually really irritates me. If you can’t finish something, don’t sign up for it. Oh well, maybe the camera will be a little less shaky in the next movie! ;)

  10. Angelika says:

GARY ROSS! Yes, although Hunger Games wasn’t perfect…… I still LOVED IT!! IF it’s not Gary Ross I think any of the directors from Harry Potter would be great. or JAMES CAMERON!! hahaha. I just really want it to be Gary ROSS or any HARRY POTTER DIRECTOR!!

  11. ashley says:

martin scorsese is a good director mayb or steven spielberg

    • garretto says:

Scorsese would change it too much, Spielberg would turn it into indigestible pablum (see War Horse, well made but treacly).

  12. Peeta's wife says:

    GARY ROSS

  13. D&JC says:

Chris and Paul Weitz would do a wonderful job! They’ll capture the dark sides as well as the context of the movie. They’ll keep the “sense” of the book as well as keeping what was important in THG and making CF better! They understand the importance of making a sequel as great as the orginal if not better

  14. Hannah says:

    James Cameron best director ever!

  15. Sphynx says:

I voted for Aronofsky. But I would also be happy with Alfonso Cuarón, or Chris Weitz.
