Will ‘The Avengers’ Beat ‘The Hunger Games’?

World Watching Hunger Games

So far in the box office, ‘The Hunger Games’ has been unstoppable. Our beloved story has held the #1 spot for four weeks in a row, with a box office opening that placed it in the top for a non-sequel movie at $152.5 million.

However, there is another huge franchise opening on May 4 with a similarly large following, ‘The Avengers‘. Moviefone asks the question, will ‘The Avengers‘ beat ‘The Hunger Games‘?

The Avengers or The Hunger Games

“The Avengers,” which brings together Marvel superheroes Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and Captain America for the first time, is currently tracking better than “The Hunger Games.” Audiences are also showing more interest than they did in “The Dark Knight,” which opened to $158.4 million in 2008. (Its sequel, “The Dark Knight Rises,” opens later this year and could potentially smash both films in ticket sales.)

That would put the potential debut of the Joss Whedon-directed “Avengers” closer to $160 million, which would best Marvel’s top opening so far: $128.1 million for “Iron Man 2.”

So if ‘The Avengers‘ reaches that $160 million projection, it would definitely surpass ‘The Hunger Games’ opening. But, do you think it will?

Do you think ‘The Avengers’ will be bigger than ‘The Hunger Games’?

No one will ever really know until the avengers comes out that the Avengers is better than the Hunger Games. But i would choose The Hunger Games still because of the books and the movie.

  2. Lia says:

I think it will only for the fact that there has been a drought of good movies since THG came out and the fanboys will be out to see it – although I don’t think it will have the staying power of THG, as in I don’t think people will see it more than once. I wanted to give THG a second look because I was so excited the first time that there were some things I wanted to take a closer looks at (Clove in the hover craft bouncing around in excitement?). We’ll see – if it’s a good movie it might – different demographics – more men, but fewer younger girls is my guess.

Fanboys? How stereotypical. There are many females older and younger who like comics and who will be going to see The Avengers of which I happen to be one of many so your argument is flawed and insulting. It could easily be said that only reason why HG did so well because it appealed to the same bunch of Tween fans that read and watched twilight. Of course that’s not the reason but you see the point. I read THG and saw the movie once the hype died down. It was good but it wasn’t that good and to be honest it really didn’t have any competition so of course it appeared like it blew everything out the water box office wise. Its like a average speed animal against snails and another average speed animal. THG is not an original idea but the copy of a concept that has been done so many times. The Avengers is the original concept of Stan Lee still going strong for 60 years. I say it has better than fair chance.

I’m sorry, I agree the Avengers have many fans.. but honestly? Saying the HG only have tween and teen fans is just as stereotypical. Besides, the Hunger Games’ context is much deeper than just superheroes fighting with aliens. The Avengers is a good movie, maybe close to the HG, but maybe you should try reading something other than comics, once in a while, and also Suzanne Collins got the idea from a greek myth, not any other book. You go around saying the Avengers is an original completely?? Like whoever you want to, and I have nothing against the Avengers fans, but it doesn’t matter that HG is more modern, the Avengers doesn’t express the feelings and emotions like in HG. I went to the premiere of both in my hometown, but honestly you could see the people in the theater for the HG were a little more excited… I do not mean to fight, but I hope you see my point.. Thank you..

If you prefer THG over TA, thats fine. However I don’t buy into people being more excited about THG. For some this is certainly true, but all in all the numbers don’t support this. I have seen both and thought both were good. For me I was more excited to TA. That’s because I am a bigger fan of the avengers just as I suspect you are a bigger fan of THG novels.

  3. Mark says:

I don’t think it will have a bigger opening than the Hunger Games, it will come close maybe. I really don’t think The Avengers will have the staying power The Hunger Games had at all also. You never do know though. I mean I never would have guessed the Hunger Games would be #1 for four weeks straight!

  4. Peeta#1 says:

I think it wil do good but wont stay #1 four weeks in a row!

  5. Chloe Ford says:

AVENGERS? Seriosly? This is the Hunger Games. I don’t think it will come close. The Hunger Games is fantasy but realistic and makes you feel that emotion but the Avengers? About super hero’s? If it does beat Hunger Games I wouldn’t be shouting and crying because I know that hunger games is my life and I swear this book changed me. Whether it’s 2080 Hunger Games will always be alive in my heart.

    • Jon says:

Avengers. Easily. You guys don’t get it. This is a group in Marvel Comics that have been around since the 60s my friend. Your comment is totally biased against the Avengers, and believe me, for comic book fans, this is very, very surreal. This is something we have been waiting for, for around 60 years or so. And yes, comic fans will be seeing this movie multiple times. You guys are too caught up in this Hunger Games thing. The Avengers isn’t just a movie. Its Marvel comics most known team with their most known hero, its an event. Its a huge deal. So yes, The Avengers will beat the hunger games.

Oh by the way, people who have seen it are already calling it the best movie of the year. Sorry. But this isn’t “just a super hero movie”. If you read comics, and learn about the characters, who each have a MUCH bigger history than the hunger game characters, you will understand why The Avengers will be such a big movie.

Avengers beats hunger games, thats my prediction.

      • ladyomegared says:

        I second the emotion..Avengers easily
And HG didnt do that hot overseas in places like UK, the box office was just good here in the States. The Avengers hands down will fare better worldwide.
No bias that’s box office facts

  6. Chriss says:

I think this is going to be hard… I think The Avengers can come very close but will not stay #1 longer than The Hunger Games…What I would very worry about is The Dark Knight Rises that movie is going to be epic as Hunger Games…seriously. Plus, it’s the last one. Anyways, The Hunger Games is the best non-sequel movie in the box-office of all-time and that is already good enough :)

  7. soske says:

with so many a-listers in one movie, avengers has to beat the hunger games. they just have to. then later on the dark knight may probably beat the avengers record. and so on and so forth

  8. mike says:

Honestly I hope it doesn’t beat the Hunger Games but it probably will. I can tell it won’t be nearly as good as the Hunger Games but super heroes… No movie stands a chance. The Hunger Games is a more realistic, and emotional movie, with a more meaningful story, but people still want sensless action with cheesy super-hero tag-teams. And dramatic inspirational one liners about being a team and what not. The Avengers will be chalk full of long awaited fan service. Even if it doesn’t beat it, Batman will sweep through and squash it. I’m just bring realistic. I’m a Hunger Games fan all the way and it pains me to say this.

  9. it better not beat THG! THG rulez!!!!!!!!

  10. jrbear says:

No way! It may gross $100 mil it’s first weekend, but it won’t get close to HG’s $152.5 million. The previews look pretty lame, even by Super Hero movie standards. It’s not a ‘must see’ by any means except for fan boys. HG has a much larger fan base. It will drop off fast as well. HG had 4 weeks with little competition. Avengers will have a lot more week after week.

    • Blahbit says:

Well to be honest, you’re contradicting yourself… you said HG had 4 weeks with little competition… by saying they had little competition obviously shows that no other big movie is competing with it. For the avengers, it’s the same case, they will have little competition… and will most DEFINITELY DOMINATE the box office.

    • Kelsey says:

I have deleted Sam’s comment based on offensive language. We love the discussion, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    • Jon says:

100 mil..haha are you serious? Its already passed that and the weekend isn’t even over. Hold on….i want you to respond to this. Its going to destroy hunger games opening weekend. Watch. It got an A+ on cinemacritics, oh yeah, fanbase? Avengers by far. Comic fans have been waiting for this for 60 years

    • Pwdunagan says:

No way it wll beat THG huh? Now don’t you feel silly?

    • Ella says:

Oh course it won’t…it’llgorss $200 million in its first week :p

  11. Always Right says:

    The Hollywood Reporter says

“According to first tracking, unaided awareness in Avengers is 13 percent, compared with 10 percent for Dark Knight and 11 percent for Hunger Games; first choice is 23 percent, tying with Hunger Games and higher than the 19 percent for Dark Knight.
Total awareness is 85 percent, compared with 76 percent for Dark Knight and 74 percent for Hunger Games; definite interest is 61 percent, versus 62 percent for Dark Knight and 54 percent for Hunger Games.
The interest among males in Avengers is surging, though females are likewise expressing more interest than they did in Dark Knight.”

  12. Alice says:

I think Avengers could do better at the box-office as there is huge anticipation and fan following for it across all ages.

But who cares, it wouldn’t take away from the fact that the Hunger Games was spectacular, and records are set to be broken. There’s no need to dismiss one film or the other… let’s keep in mind that THG is a fantastic, invented story too.

I for one will be excited to see the Avengers as well.

  13. Ridge says:

Well it may beat The Hunger Games but I think The Dark Knight Rises will beat it. Also you still have MIB 3, Brave, and The Hobbit this year. All of those movies will knock it out of the park. This is a very interesting, and promising year as far as movies go.

  14. zyra says:

no…!!! the “AVENGERS” can’t beat the hunger games…. and i know that hunger games will still be #1 …… oh c’mon…!!

    • Jon says:

I know. Look at it. Avengers has ALREADY made more than Hunger games over seas. This movie is going to blow Hunger Games away. And emotion, and impact, and legacy, The Avengers have been around since the 60s. This is more than just a movie. Its a cinematic event

  15. Chris says:

Hey both the avengers and hunger games will be beat out by THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

  16. Chris says:

Its the last batman movie not too mention the dark knight broke major records and was nominated for best picture if you dont believe me look it up plus everyone should see the new trailer EPIC STORY EPIC CHARACTERS AND JUST PLAIN EPIC “THE LEGEND ENDS JULY20″

  17. Jon says:

    200.3 million. enough said

  18. bob says:

there have been estimates that the avengers movie will reach the billion mark… at the very Least, it will break the 400m mark.. so there’s that…

  19. clark says:

it’s official.. avengers reached 1 billion in 19 days
