Woody Harrelson – Just How Drunk is Haymitch?
MTV has another interview with Woody Harrelson, this time discussing Haymitch’s habit of, well, not being sober most of the time.
“I was a little bit worried about looking kind of phony,” he admitted.
Of course, there is one way to make sure your drunken performance is as authentic as possible—which was not lost on Woody.
“Now some method actors might go drunk on-screen,” he mused. But the veteran actor said that one early attempt at that approach was more than enough: “I tried it one time when I was doing ‘Indecent Proposal.’ I had this scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk…and I got smashed! Because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it. But it wasn’t a pleasant experience.”
And in the end, he said, what we’ll see is a Haymitch of Variable Drunkenness, thanks to the input of director Gary Ross.
“There was a thing during filming, with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene,” Woody explained. “I was always pushing for more drunkenness, but he didn’t want me to be drunk in every scene. I was always pushing for more, just because I think it’s kind of funny and interesting. But knowing Gary, I think he got the right balance.”
